The APS is a derivative of the Russian Kalashnikov rifle family, and is a specially designed model intended for underwater combat. Designed in the Soviet Union, the APS is a rather unique rifle due to the small number of similarities it shares with the AK-47, at least aesthetically. It was designed in the 1970s, and first produced in 1975 at the Tula Arms Plant. Interestingly, the design was so focused on water combat that the rifle is less accurate when fired outside of water. The APS is chambered in 5.66, which was a unique round designed specifically for this weapon's 26-round magazine. The APS has more penetrating power than a spear-gun, but is also more difficult to maneuver in water due to its increased length over other underwater weapons produced in the USSR; for example, the SPP-1 pistol.
