I'd believe Alex is a vampire and former Holy Roman Emperor. Or maybe it's a Blackadder scenario and Alex is a descendant of Ferdinand, who also hung out with Count Vincent Von Caravel and they got into all sorts of hilarious hijinks in 17th century Germany.
