Overview
Sushi is a traditional
Japanese dish. It consists of slices of raw fish or seafood, tamago (sweet egg omelette), or portions of
roe served over sticky, vinegared white rice. Sushi is distinct from sashimi, as sashimi does not include rice.
Variants
Rolled sushi or "makizushi" is a popular type of sushi that includes rice, fish, and other fillings rolled within sheets of dried seaweed. Temakizushi has similar ingredients in a conical roll that can be held in the hand and eaten like an ice cream cone. Inari-zushi is a pouch of fried tofu usually stuffed with just vinegar rice. Americanized versions of sushi can include special rolls or unorthodox fillings that are not typical to traditional Japanese sushi; one example is the iconic California roll: avocado, cucumber, and imitation crab rolled with rice. The American rainbow roll is basically a California roll enhanced with toppings of avocado slices and mixed sashimi.
The musubi variant is unique to the
Hawaiian islands, and includes portions of fried
Spam or hot dogs over rice. Whatever the filling, sushi is typically served with generous portions of wasabi, pickled ginger root slices, and soy sauce. Sushi can be enjoyed as lunch, dinner, or a snack, and is best accompanied with green tea, lager
beer, or sake.
Sushi in Games
Sushi has had a presence in game as varied as the styles of sushi themselves. It may appear in action or role-playing games as an item that replenishes character health, as it does in
River City Ransom or
Legend of the Mystical Ninja. Sushi appears in the Island stages of
Little Big Planet as both a setpiece item and a walking enemy, and can be made available for the in-game level editor. The creation of delecious sushi has also been one of the missions of
Cooking Mama: Cook Off for the
Wii.
