Founded by Chris Avellone, Chris Jones, Chris Parker, Darren Monahan, and Feargus Urquhart in 2003 after the collapse of Black Isle Studios, Obsidian Entertainment is most famous for developing PC role playing games.
Obsidian Entertainment started by taking over the development of sequels from Bioware. They first started with Knights of the Old Republic II - The Sith Lords and Neverwinter Nights 2. Both games had a heavy focus on dialogue and inter-party influence.
In their first original IP, Obsidian Entertainment released the spy-themed shooter-RPG Alpha Protocol on June 1, 2010.
On April 20 2009, Bethesda Softworks announced that a new game in the Fallout series, Fallout: New Vegas would be developed by Obsidian. Fallout: New Vegas was released on October 19, 2010.
On September 14, 2012, Obsidian Entertainment has announced a Project Eternity on crowd funding platform Kickstarter, on a pledge to drive 1.1 million US dollars for its development.
On January 26, 2017, Obsidian announced Pillars of Eternity II: Deadfire and launched a crowd funding campaign through Fig. The game reached it's funding goal in less than a day and was released on May 8th, 2018.
The studio was acquired by Microsoft Studios in 2018. At The Game Awards 2018, Obsidian announced The Outer Worlds due for release in 2019. Despite the Microsoft purchase, the game will be published by Take-Two Interactive Software, Inc.'s Private Division.
