Somehow Dan shouting about free computers from prison at the start of this one just feels right to me

This doesn't seem to me like it's strictly following FTC sponsorship guidelines.

Remember when this website had a hard line between editorial and advertising? I do.

Sure is a shame you fired the one guy who cared about that so much, it’s the entire reason the site even exists in the first place

@iamjohn: Can you explain what you're actually mad about? They do ads on the podcast for things they use too. They got these computers and are doing an ad for the company that sent them to them.

@benl: Do you actually believe that an ad for a product on the podcast is the same thing as a video whose entire purpose is to be sponsored content and show off fancy computers given to them for free by an advertiser with no editorial content about the products provided to them by said advertiser?

My point is incredibly obvious. This video only exists to be an ad for NXZT computers. It’s gross and sucks and Giant Bomb of yore would never have done this. What more do you need explained?

@iamjohn:

you're seeing the current realities of running a video game website that wants to pay a decent enough salary and benefits to a shmedium-sized team that also desperately needs to expand its video editing capacities. giant bomb and gamespot are still basically hot off layoffs, waypoint just got shutdown, ign had layoffs last year. giant bomb of yore wouldn't have done this because they didn't have to. video games coverage is dealing with a stress test across the board. and if you're a site like giant bomb, you need to pursue revenue in as many ways as you can defend.

in this case, they formed a partnership with a company that builds computers, and as part of that deal they made a video that showcases what those computers can do. there's no ambiguity; there's no deception. and as you can tell from the teardown segment, they're not portraying these computers to be anything they're not.

@lab392: If that’s the case, the site no longer serves its purpose and needs to reconsider why it even exists. Because if the site’s actions in the past eighteen months hadn’t done enough to devalue the subscriptions and my desire to support them further, explicitly making branded content for a site that, once again, only exists because its founder got fired for refusing to treat an advertising partner with kid gloves would be the last straw

Imagine getting mad that a site puts out a fun and harmless video that happens to show off the computers the staff use because it somehow goes against how this site was able to run as a business 15 years ago. Maybe grow up.

Anyway, this was a lot of fun. Cool to have the whole crew on as well.

Real mature adults know that this was no coincidence - they were showing off the computers because of a business transaction. One after Jeff was fired. As if I could ever make such a mistake. Never. Never! Are you telling me they just happened to use these specific computers? No, they orchestrated it! NZXT! But not our Giant Bomb! Couldn't be precious Giant Bomb! What a sick joke.
