When Majin Buu is released and gains the power of Piccolo, Goten, Trunks, and Gohan, Goku finds himself outmatched as is. Though he possesses the Potara Earrings he received from the Elder Kai, Goku lacked an ally to fuse. After considering Dende and Hercule, Vegeta suddenly appears to fight Buu once more, after being given a chance to return to Earth by King Yema. Despite his pride, Vegeta, to save his only son, agrees to the fusion. Together, Goku and Vegeta fuse to become the fighter Vegito.

Vegito is incredibly powerful upon his original appearance, beating Buu easily. Once Buu decides to use his absolute power, Vegito turns into a Super Saiyan.

Super Vegito is statistically the most powerful character in the Dragon Ball Z storyline.
Super Vegito is statistically the most powerful character in the Dragon Ball Z storyline.

Super Vegito overwhelms Buu with power, beating the monster to a pulp. Eventually beginning to toy with Buu, Buu uses his magic to transform Vegito into a piece of candy. Despite his form, Vegito retains all of his physical strength and control, beating Buu down further with intense speed. Annoyed by Vegito's arrogance and skill, Buu changes Vegito back to normal. Vegito continues to attack Buu, until Buu steathily uses his chopped-off antennae to absorb Vegito. It isn't until Vegito appears inside Buu that it is revealed that it was all a plan by Vegito to rescue Piccolo, Goten, Trunks, and Gohan. Thanks to a barrier formed by Vegito, he is not absorbed into a pod like the others. Once the barrier is let down, Vegito defuses back into Goku and Vegeta.

Vegito's appearance is a close mix of both Goku and Vegeta's appearance. His clothing is similar to Goku's training outfit, though with the colors reversed, and he is equipped with Vegeta's gloves from his Saiyan armor. He also has Vegeta's widow's peak along with a stream of hair similar to Goku's hair. Vegito's arrogant nature is thought to be from Vegeta's attitude, but it's blantantly obvious that Vegito cares about his friends and family, after he is taken inside Buu's body.

Vegito retains all of Goku and Vegeta's skills along with a few new ones like the Spirit Sword, a blade made of energy that he uses to impale Buu with and the Banshee Blast, a five-fingered barrage of energy that is used to attack Buu's Super Ghosts from Gotenks' Super Ghost Kamikaze Attack.

Vegito's name is taken from the Japanese names Vegeta and Kakarotto. He has also been known as "Vegetto" or in the case of the English manga translation, Vegerot, using the English names Vegeta and Kakarot, Goku's original Saiyan name.
