Great, long, immersive, and terribly buggy
I don't know why, but I like golf games. I mean, I hate the actual sport, but I love to play them on a computer (since ooold Jack Nicklaus PC versions). I didn't play any of them since at least 4 years, thus I was quite eager when my girlfriend brought home Tiger Woods 10.
Ok. First of all: Tiger Woods PGA Tour 10 is a "would be" great game. It would deserve a 5 star rating. But: it's buggy (at least the Playstation 3 version), in a terrible way. Not so buggy that it totally ruins the game, but buggy enough to be actually frustrating.
I'll simply go with the goods, and then the bads.
Good morning, we are the goods:
- Great golf simulation.
- Lots of courses (and many more can be bought online).
- Many types of games to play. Also, the new Tournament Challenges are really nice.
- Controlling the swing with the swing simulator actually works perfectly.
- Lots of customization available for your player (though, hey: where have the earrings, the tank tops, and the tattoos gone? I remember them from previous Tiger Woods versions, but they're not present here).
- The new stroke simultanous online option is great. You can play a match of stroke play, without having to wait for each opponent to shoot.
Good night, we are the bads:
- The inclination of the ground from where you're shooting affects ball direction. Ok, this would be a fine realistic thing, but sadly it's buggy. I mean: sometimes the ground is inclined, but the trajectory is not affected, and sometimes the opposite. You have to learn exactly on which golf course the ground will affect trajectories, and on which not (and this happens differently for each hole).
- You go for a perfect stroke... you're almost in the hole... you hit the flagstick... and BAM!!! Your ball is launched through space! Yup: this is the flagstick bug. Or maybe it's normal that a ball touching a flagstick ignites it's power engines and goes where no man has ever gone before.
- Sometimes the game simply stucks. You thrive hard to complete a course (or a challenge), and when you finally do it with excellent result, Tiger Woods 10 crashes. Noooot nice!
- Live Tournaments!!! One very publicized new online option for Tiger Woods 10! Except: for me it doesn't work at all. Each time I try to connect to Live Tournaments, I get a "server error" response. I found that this happens to many people around the world, and with no reason at all. I use the best connection available in Italy (with no firewall blocking my Playstation), and I have no problems with any online games (not even with the simple Tiger Woods 10 online matches), but nope: Live Tournaments don't accept me.
- Crashes, crashes, crashes!!! Online games are fun to play. But crashes happen sooooo often.
- Oh, and one last thing. Every customization is achieved via completing challenges and winning courses. But, you can also buy them online (via the Playstation Store). Maybe it's me, but I find this option terribly unfair (also, it looks like a really cheap trick to get more money from users), and I hope I won't see it in any other games.
Summary
As you see, Tiger Woods would be a great game. But it's too buggy. And I'm not even talking about the bugs that were solved with the last update (golf clubs disappearing and else): I'm simply talking about the ones that are still there, 5 months after it's been released. Sigh!Anyway, I'm still playing it (got it since 1 month), and having some frustrating fun.
