Sonic the Hedgehog is back, and he is with a friend
Sonic is back for his second adventure, with a fox by the name of Tails. Dr. Robotnik is back with a vengeance, and Sonic and Tails have to go through 9 zones to stop him in his tracks once again. Sonic 2 with take you on a thrill ride of Blast Processing.
Sonic the Hedgehog 2 starts you out in Green Hill Zone once again, but with a new refurbished look. The plot or story is the same basic concept as the first game, stopping Dr. Robotnik. Sonic 2 is back with a friend who follows throughout the game, and this game is even much faster than the previous game too. You still have to race around each level collecting coins trying to complete each act as fast and flawless as you can. Collecting 100 coins still grants you a free life, with power ups or coin boxes lying around to help you out. The control is same, with even smoother control and a better overall feeling. The new addition to Sonic 2 is the Spin Dash, which allows you to charge up and dash at the speed of light. All of the levels are still made to be ran through as fast as you possibly can making the experience as best as it can be. The graphics and detail, level design and all of the color as well as the imaginative worlds, make this one of the most spectacular games to look at, and very much enjoyable. In Sonic 2, and all of the speed, the game runs smooth, and never slows down, not even for Sonic who gets very fast in most levels, like the Chemical Plant Zone.
The controls for this game are very straight forward, making this perfect game accessible to anyone in the world. Now with the spin dash, getting stuck into places is no hassle anymore, and giving a huge push of speed. Tails doesn't do anything at all really, but getting himself killed all of the time, but that doesn't affect you. Your main goal is to collect all of the Chaos Emeralds, and save the world from Dr. Robotnik. A new feature, present for the first time in the Sonic series, is the ability to play the game all the way through with Super Sonic, but that's if you collect every Chaos Emerald beating the game prior. All in all, the control is some of the best for any game, and aren't difficult to use at all.
The presentation in Sonic 2 is perfect, and has nothing wrong with it, it looks beautiful. The music score is one of the best soundtracks in video games to date, and potentially can't be beat even to this day, it adds atmosphere and keeps your hands tightly gripped to your Genesis game pad and not wanting to let go. The music definitely keeps you rocking.
With this review coming to a closing, I just want to conclude that Sonic the Hedgehog 2 is one of the greatest games ever created, definitely top 3 of the 16 bit generation, and posed a dear threat to the SNES. Everyone has to play this game, and with the way Sega is throwing this game around nowadays, there is no excuse not to try it out. Sonic is a great game, and will always be a staple in the video game world forever.
