Party of One: The Jeff Gerstmann Home Game: Super Double Dragon, Homebrewce Lee, More!

I certainly didn't intend to play Super Double Dragon start-to-finish here, but that's exactly how it went. Hey, how about Bruce Lee for the Master System and some PS1 skateboarding, too?

Who wants a delicious solo stream with your favorite video game personalities? Your table is ready!

Honestly, I think Super Double Dragon (or Return?) looks pretty good, actually. Especially compared to the rest of the series, which is either outdated (1-3) or straight garbage (everything else but Neon).

And personally I think the first three are also straight garbage. Always have since playing the NES versions for the first time, don't like the arcade ones any more than those.

When Jeff says the sound board is going to be loud around 1:20 he isn't wrong! It is loud.

Ha, I had a unusual urge to play through Super Double Dragon earlier this year. Wasn't able to finish it so it seems I'll just have to see the end via this video.

@jeff Most streaming software is an absolutely awful mess for audio (except for vMix, I guess, which I think you guys used/maybe still use at the office? But it's crazy expensive). Everybody I know who cares about audio quality, as well as an easier way to level, uses Ableton or the like--Ableton + Lemur has been good to me.

Super Double Dragon is my favorite Double Dragon game!

Glad Jeff ended up not hating it and even finishing it.

I always felt that both the blocking/grabbing system and power up system were pretty nice additions, giving you something else to do. Kicking backward while grabbing onto someone is the shit.

Depends what you need. The basic HD version is $60, and the 4K verison that gets you mostly everything it does is $700 (most expensive version is $1200). When you consider it's providing an alternative to, e.g., a Tricaster, which yes provides the hardware as well but can cost tens of thousands (460: ~$15K, TC1: ~ $15-20K, 8000 with control surface: $35k) it doesn't seem that bad.

@stordoff: Don't get me wrong, I love vMix. It's awesome. I have a three-camera setup because Panasonic basically owns my life at this point and I would use it if I could rationalize paying for it. (Instead, I wrote a tablet app to control OBS.) But I meant in the context of Jeff doing Jeff things at home, or anybody doing the streamer thing.

The basic HD version is really pretty lousy for this sort of thing; its multiviews are just way too limited. IMO you need 4K or Pro, and given that OBS + a DAW gets you like 95-99% of the way there for Hot Streaming Action, I don't think it makes a ton of sense. And, hey, Jeff does music stuff, he's probably got one hanging around.

(All that said, the real secret awesome part of vMix, IMO, is vMix Call.)

Did @jeff go the whole game of Double Dragon Super without ever doing a single special move (Hold R or L to charge up)? Not that it'd make for a better game, but there's a hurricane kick, and if you're fully charged you attack faster and react to stuns better.

@barna: Same. I loved Super Double Dragon back in the day and play through it every couple years or so as Jeff did here. Though I'd never seen the extra level at the end from the Japanese version. It's tough to be a stream where they play and discuss two of my favorite SNES games SDD and Contra III: The Alien Wars. My how Konami has fallen.

@paulunga: Yeah I grew up with Super Double Dragon as my first and when I got around to playing the older ones I wasn't into it. Double Dragon Neon was alright though I didn't finish it.

We need some full Streets of Rage playthroughs on this site. Specifically the non-US version of 3, which apparently has a completely different story? Though SoR 2 has THREE elevator sequences!

I think of character action games as modern beat em ups. I'm playing through Bayonetta 2 again, and when skipping cutscenes you're basically just beating up a screen of guys to move on.

Heck, I took a picture of my high score in Skate Or Die. Got that developed and... well, nothing ever came about from it. It was on the Downhill Jam stage, and I found a way to continually blast that punk Lester for a wicked high score. Wonder where that photo is now...

The uh, what does games media call it... uh, character action game genre sort of took over the beat em up genre. Your DMC and Ninja Gaiden (the 3D ones) and Bayonetta type games. I agree with Jeff that Yakuza is essentially a complicated beat em up as well.

Also, on separate topic, Metal Slug 3 best Contra game. Heavy machine gun! Thank you! Okay!

In one of the Extra Life streams (I don't remember the year... maybe the one where Vinny shocked his balls) they did a full SOR2 playthrough.

I've rewatched it several times, but can't make it out. What is it that Jeff's asking at approx. 39:36? It sounds like he's saying, " 'Is this a gamier game?' That's a...you know...that's a good..."

I'm not sure about the "gamier."

I didn't play it in years, but I remember Super Double Dragon being a good game, with decent gameplay, soundtrack, and graphics. Wasn't better than Streets of Rage 2 or even 3, but still good.
