Let's take a look at the 1.0 release of Skater XL and, if this stream can handle it, some Meme Run 2? If we survive those, we'll see what else is going on.

It's a lockdown baby! We're under orders to work from home so here we go!

Steam does that when the game opens another program. If you use 3DMark in steam and it opens a browser to show your benchmark results online then Steam will think 3DMark is running until you close your browser.

Skater XL still appeals to me, but maybe not for their 1.0 asking price. Hopefully they still keep pumping out content for it, because I otherwise like what they're going for.

At least they could've done something like what Session was doing for their challenges. That game has you recreate famous skate lines, which I think is a pretty neat way to go about challenges in a skating game that's trying to go for a realistic approach. That said, Session is really cryptic about it and unless you have an encyclopedic knowledge of skate vids, you probably will have to look up what to do for all of the challenges instead of doing it naturally. But that game feels even more early access than this does, so maybe that'll fulfill my needs. It hasn't had many updates lately though because they've been completely redoing their physics engine.

That Meme Run 2 death screen destroys the video bitrate for me every time it's on screen. Whole thing just turns into a mess. Also, the game doesn't look very good.

The only words I can come up with that can describe how I feel about Meme Run 2, is "exasperatingly insipid".

SKATER XL IS FORTY DOLLARS?!?!

Holy shit that's a rip-off. Also, for something whose entire selling pitch was its control system, it controls like utter dogshit. Very much a bad version of Skate. I got this piece of crap on early access and demanded a refund. They should pay people to play it, not the other way around. Horrible.

FORTY DOLLARS?!?!

So in Skater XL's version of downtown LA, they compressed the actual city so that my office (the Bank of America building, which is the off-angle building with the strange sculpture in front of it Jeff looks at around 30:09) is a couple of blocks away from the Staples Center, when it's actually like a 30+ minute walk away & up a hill.

Still, everything they did include looks pretty good & faithful, too bad the game doesn't seem like it offers much. Also, during the pandemic, it probably legitimately looks this deserted since no one is going to the office right now & that's most of the people who are ever downtown during the day lol

As someone who skated in real life, I adore SkaterXL. I can totally see from the outside wanting the objectives and challenges, but as a pure sandbox and idea creator for tricks, its fantastic. It wouldn't hurt the game if they made challenges, but I can see the devs perspective. I love it so far.

the bummer for me is that skater doesnt have a multiplayer, even like a small 4 player session, would be great if you didnt have a set of things to do, you could play horse or whatever with friends and make your own fun.

look man, I'm down for the chill 2009 vibes of skating at random spots and getting better. hopefully the'll put in cool missions like getting the good gruyere across the map for the garden party you really don't want to go to but your girl is really excited for it so you have to!

SkaterXL looks sterile and empty. The skating looks fine, but there's no atmosphere.

I want to give props to Easy Day Studios for what they've accomplished with Skater XL as a small team of skaters making their first video game for other skaters. i've watched since the beginning of the project, and they've overcome significant challenges to get the tech to the point it's at now. it's so cool that so many other people are interested in the game, and i hope they get it to a point where it is fun for everyone, but this was always meant for skaters since day one. that was where all the marketing went. and that audience seems to really like it. it sucks that releasing a game into 1.0 is the way that it is these days, where you can't just have everything in the game already. but this 1.0 version is going to be a really solid foundation for future updates and for modders, who've already done so much, like adding multiplayer, tricks, stats, and hundreds of new maps.

I skate every day, and typically play this before heading out. It's nothing like any other skate game out there. I love THPS and Skate, of course. But they are totally different. I also have owned Session since it's Early Access release and have a total of about 2 hours in it. In Skater XL I have about 170, and there is just no end in sight.

Man, Skater XL seems like kind of a bummer. :/

In a world where OG Skate and Skate 3 are both backward compatible, that $40 price tag just seems too steep, even given the admittedly cool control scheme.

Like, I get what they're going for. I used to skate a lot too. And I definitely used to spend literal hours of my life hanging out at one specific spot in the Skate games, but I'd also like, you know, a game.

Seeing actual professional skaters champion things like this, Session, etc. is cool and all, but I also feel like professional skaters maybe... don't have the most discerning taste in the world when it comes to video games?

If Microsoft could just release Skate 3 remaster or something for the PC, Skater XL and Session would be instantly rendered obsolete. As a PC only guy, I really want to play a Skate type game but all of my choices are garbage. I'd play Skate 3 literally right now.

Band of Horses is an interesting choice for the Skater XL soundtrack. I mean, I love them, but they're not really the vibe I expect!

Edit: Next up was the Animal Collective song. Again, super weird choice, but whoever was in charge of this soundtrack got into indie music the same time I did.

Got 170 hours in Skater XL, and about 80 hours in Session. Both games are exactly what I'm looking for. Skate sims to make my own skate videos in.

Yeah, EA. I did a little research right after this video and the Skate games are on EA's subscription thing, but not available for PC.

@neau: haha yeah i thought the same. Heinrich Maneuver, My Girls. Half expected an Arcade Fire song and maybe some Strokes, Killers, Death Cab for Cutie and Yeah Yeah Yeahs. Totally fine music, but is it skater music? I'm not sure it really is? Maybe it is?

I expect skaters nowadays to go a bit heavier on the music. Maybe some Code Orange and Deafheaven or something.

And THAT was E3 2020! Haha.

Man, the excitement and then immediate crash and burn disappointment for Jeff when we see what type of game Skater XL is was rough. Poor Jeff.

I've had moments like that is games when you realize a game you were hyped about isn't what you thought it would be.
