Quick Look: The Diofield Chronicles

Looks like the gameplay continues to hold up beyond the demo. Really looking forward to diving into this later this week as the Q4 2022 / Q1 2023 flood of Square-Enix titles begins - next week is Valkyrie Elysium which also had a pretty good demo.

It's driving me insane how everyone keeps calling this an RTS. Isn't this basically just a old school CRPG? It's real time with pause looks really fun though the story complaints are a bummer.

Oh I don't like the look of the combat at all. Very much like a CRPG but looks really awkward.

Now I feel extremely old.

Baldur's Gate I & II; The more modern 3 that is in EA is like Divinity Original Sin I & II, which is turn based tactics combat.

Icewind Dale I & II; Just combat. What story?

I get where the CRPG comparisons are coming from, but I really don't know that it's all that accurate.

Outside of the combat having a resemblance to CRPGs, pretty much everything is slanted more towards action or tactical JRPGs. This has none of the pen & paper roleplaying stuff (character sheets, dice rolls, etc.) that to me is what really defines a CRPG.

The name of the game is wrong in the video titles. Its correct in the wiki/tag entry though.
