Why is the itunes feed always a day late?

Might be useful to put in the notes that this is now spun out to its own feed. I kept refreshing the Giant Bomb Presents feed in my podcasts app and nothing showed up. I would guess it was mentioned on the show, but after a quick note here would help. Have a great one!

Metal Gear Solid 3: Subsistence is the best video game of that entire console generation (Dreamcast, PS2, Gamecube, Xbox.) and also the greatest Metal Gear game. Nevermind just the Solids.

Metal Gear Solid 5 is the best Metal Gear game, I'm surprised this is up for debate. It's also the least like all the other MGS games, which I roundly couldn't stand...so maybe that's why I think this?

The correct list looks something like:

MGS2>MGS3>MGS>MG2>>MGS4>MGS5>PW>MG1

I hope Jeff is ashamed of his words, deeds and MGS list after this. :)

I think i would go with

MGS3 > MGS > MGS5 > MGS4 > MGS2 > PW > Rising > MG 2 > MG1 > Acid games > Portable Ops

MGS2 post modern streaks are amazing, so talking about MGS2 is always a very fun thing, and is interesting to a wider audience than other MGS stories. So storywise, MGS2 will probably have the most appeal. Being able to do useful stuff in first person was a very awesome addition as well . Too bad that playing the actual game is just not that fun compared to the other metal gears. The Oilrig, with all it's same-ish struts, is a fairly boring environment. You go to the same struts multiple times to activate the nodes, find explosives, find a disguise or finding a VIP. Rose was insufferable as well.

Don't get me wrong, when i played MGS2 at release i was captivated and enjoyed it a lot. But when you have experienced it all, and read up about the story and what it all means, there's very little reason to go back to that game to play it again. In comparison, MGS3 had me complete it like 4 times in a row because it was just so much fun to play. And that was the version with the bad camera!

After listening to this, it makes total sense why Jeff likes 2 the most. He's in it for Kojima weirdness and didn't like the stealth. I like both aspects of the games.

I would have loved more discussion about playing video-games while deaf. Very interesting!

@brainling: I agree, but I'm someone who liked the first MGS. MGS fans hate 5 because their precious dumb anime story was incomplete or something. Whatever, the gameplay is the only part of MGS games that are good.

Honestly, talking about it makes me really want another Splinter Cell.

Other than MGS1, which I played when it was new, I played through all Metal Gear Solids for the first time a year ago.

MGS2 is easily the worst of the "main" games.

MGS V is a generic Ubisoft game with a vague Metal Gear theme.

And it's not even a good one of those.

Re Raiden twist, yes. There is actually a 2017 game that does the Raiden twist. That you haven’t heard about the twist is a sign that everyone who saw it kept their mouths shut and kept Twitter spoiler free. Even though they really really wanted to talk about it because holy shit, it was a real gut punch of a twist. Exquisitely done, but wow it hurt.

Anyone who puts 5 first is not a Metal Gear fan and should be publicly shamed.

Another MGS3 guy here, tho MGS5 is the best playing one I don't really feel comfortable putting it with the others.

My ranking goes 3, 2, 4, 1 which is also the order I finished those games in. Was very confused (having some knowledge of the series made it worse) why 3 seemed to have the same but slightly different characters as the earlier games which I knew took place decades later. Also very surprised when I realised I was playing as who I thought was the villain of the series.

...Maybe one day I'll have something worthwhile to ask/say and will call in. Until then, I really enjoy the after show. :-)

@larmer: That's funny, i'm pretty much on the opposite side . I am all ears for the story in MGS with it's many memorable moments & characters, while i have no love for the quasi-realistic take of Splinter Cell.

The biggest problem i have with Splinter Cell is that it felt like all the 'terrorists have kidnapped / planted a bomb / stolen money / are using a hidden server' -type of storylines feel like they are so prevalent in media already . It just doesn't really stand out to me and blends together with 24, CSI, NCIS, Alpha Protocol , Rainbow Six, Mission Impossible, Call of Duty, Hitman et cetera. Gameplay-wise, I can appreciate Splinter Cell a bit more with it's gadgets , camera's and novel stealth moves.

Maybe it helps that i don't watch anime so whenever a certain anime trope happens in MGS i don't feel like i've seen that 100 times already?

The only valid take on Phantom Pain as far as I'm concerned.

The "amazing gameplay" isn't that great to begin with, simply being a very polished generic thrid person far cry game with some splinter cell tossed in there, with the most generic and visually dull open world areas, and a lack of variety and gameplay loop that no where near justifies it's atrocious 60 hour length.

MGS have always been about about the "metal gear experience" which there was none in Phantom Pain. I'll take shitty overdramatic anime story over the soulless, stale Ubisoft-wannabe experience we got with Phantom Pain.

Thought we agreed we would refer to it as Metal Gear Solid Vee. I'd say MGS3 is the best but only with the caveat that the most recent re-release is a must if you are to ever play it again. As much as I love that game even I'll admit the original PS2 version was not the most user friendly experience. MGS2 is the worst if you don't count Peacewalker. It had the lamest bosses, a low number of cool Easter Eggs, and is easily the least replayable compared to every other game.

As someone who played MGS2 as my first Metal Gear game-- I got to watch some of my older brother playing 1 when it was current and he hyped me for 2-- and one of my first "serious" games, it's my favorite. I love the isolation of the big shell, the stylish soundtrack (a nice contrast to the physical setting), and how unsettling the Arsenal Gear section gets. I've always been attracted to things that are heady, complex, etc*. so as a kid the story really struck the right chords with me, and it was one of the first times that a game, or much of anything, gave me that (though of course I recognize better content for that now, in adulthood). I was also greatly drawn to the concept and cover art.

Now as an adult I can laugh at or feel let down by enough of the series, but 2 is special for me. 3 is a close second.
