I can't believe how 90's the "Revolution" logo is.

Edit: Wait, they really namedropped "Earthbound" when talking about the virtual console? They didn't even do that until the WiiU.

I used Elecktroplankton during a set at an art gallery opening.

Not saying it was a good set.

@kasaioni: that seemed so unlike Miyamoto to say that I think he must have been 100% literal about it. It definitely takes a different tone once you see the actual tape!

@kanerobot: I had to rewind because I did a double take when I heard it the first time. That is the one thing I really miss from these older generations. No one is really going at each other like this anymore, especially not on a stage as big as E3.

My wii is black, it did come out eventually!

I remember back then stacking 3 dvds cases to get an idea of how big it was.

The black Wii did come out in North America. That's the one I own.

I won't and can't defend Nintendo WiFi Connect on the Wii, but I feel that the crew let that failure swallow up the functional state of Nintendo Network on 3DS and Wii U a bit more than I would like. Granted, the communication and friends list features you would want aren't there (or aren't used by Nintendo out of fear), but you can get in to a game of Splatoon, Mario Kart, and Monster Hunter (mostly) fine. I know Jeff eventually remarks that the Nintendo Network on the WIi U is fine near the end of the video, and that's nice.

Ah, what a cool look back. Man, I wish Battalion Wars was a better game than it turned out to be because the video looked neat. Hmm, I should watch some video of Battalion Wars Wii to see how the sequel is.

Can you guys one day upload the Saturn Reveal Press Conference at E3? That would be interesting given what happened afterwards.

Just figured out Tina is the one who along with Major Nelson kicked off the ill-received Xbox One initial reveal event. This woman has some historic reveals under her belt.

@eribuster: For sure, a lot of it was the time period too. Sure, PC and Xbox were online, but PS2 and GCN were late to the game and people were developing tunneling services like Warp Pipe to play LAN enabled games online. It seems like such a weird thing to tout "3 Wi-Fi games" but it was relatively significant.

Games Tapes, hell yeah! I really appreciate how much of a pain in the ass this has to be to do (dragging out the hardware just to play the tapes, even if you didn't have to go through that this time), but the end product is always so fascinating. Something about the nostalgia mixing with the insider info really makes for great content.

Seriously, what other site has the kind of hardware to play DVCPro tapes (especially anymore), the tapes themselves, or simply the willingness to do it? GB can be kind of magical like that.

I remember being so excited to play Nintendo games online through my DS only to be let down once I encountered one issue after another trying to connect. In fact, almost every new router purchase I've made has been to get a piece of Nintendo hardware online.

Ah this is from one of the years where E3 was so fun for me, being still young and impressionable, and I was such a big Nintendo fan. This is either going to be joyfully nostalgic or tragically nostalgic.

That number is 2...

Gamecubes strapped together...

I could watch these old press conferences for hours.

Edit: "Ubisoft-Vivendi" feels like some weird foreshadowing. There's also something oddly great about the fact that the Nintendogs demo is only half-translated (30:26). "Mr. Miyamoto and Tina"

Now I know you haven't seen this....

Bit of a disappointment this wasn't a true Game Tapes, because man that video quality is total garbage.

The commentary is top quality as usual though so I can't complain too much.

EDIT: Jesus, that Miyamoto comment to Tina "I can show you backstage" was incredibly awkward and stupid.

Wait, wait, wait... Was that "backstage" thing on purpose? I mean, was it actually implied he was taking her backstage to Ninten-do her? To polish his stylus? Mash her A button?

...Sorry about that last one.

These press conference videos are always amazing for me, because both have been from the time where I was interested in games but didn't follow them very closely. Watching this stuff is like seeing chunks of my childhood, but now getting the context to go along with it. Hope they do these more often!

Man I didn't know what I would feel watching this. In one word it was 'endearing'. I like how it made Jeff think. It is a weird company, for sure. With a lot of fans, that stand by them and can point out why. They just don't always hit their marks. In a strange way this got me hyped for the NX. Or maybe hyped is not the right word. It got me rooting for the NX. I really want it to be good.

Watching this stuff back is really fascinating. The way the conferences are put together is weird but I think that's an unfair criticism as at the time they were all doing that sort of thing and they weren't the big productions they are now. The real fascination for me comes from the idea Nintendo mentioned how important the Internet and 'Wi-Fi' games were in the context of what they went on to do. The behind the scenes stories of what ultimately went on and the reactions to how the market went must be nuts. Not that Nintendo likely cared at the time given how well the Wii went on to sell

I remember this press conference. Specifically I remember not being able to understand a word Iwata was saying at the time due to all the compression on streaming videos. I seem to recall being pretty mystified by what seemed to be one of the most pointless and content free press conferences of the year, if not all time. All of the worthwhile DS games were shown in a 30 second montage while we got a 10 minute segment on Electroplankton.

And then not a single Wii game was shown, nor was any actual explanation of the feature set. And the two big concrete promises, solid online functionality and virtual console games, ended up being pretty much worst in class in the case of the former and underwhelming in the case of the latter.

As a graphic designer, it amazes me how design and visual communication has evolved during the 2000s. Stuff from 2005 looks like it comes from 1998 but meanwhile stuff from 2016 looks nothing like something from 2009. In multiple ways, on various areas, we were stuck in the 90s pretty much until 2010.
