Best Western
So with a new and actually good Western game out, what is the best Western movie? What are your favorites? Do you like John Wayne or Clint Eastwood? Does a real Western need to be made in Italy? My favorite pure Western is The Good the Bad and the Ugly, and if we allow for a slightly broder definition it is Inglorious Basterds. That movie is is so a Western if you pay attention to how its framed, and no where near an actual WWII movie. Well discuss fellow Bombers, try to prove me wrong or right.
Ya I guess this should be on Screened but this is somewhat Red Dead related, kinda....
Dollars trilogy and Unforgiven are some of my favorite movies. Once upon a time in the west is amazing just make sure you get the correct version because there are some edited versions that cut out a lot of the movie. And Tombstone gets an honorable mention.
Tombstone. Not much of a western movie fan. Got The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly as a gift and watched half before I had to turn it off. No nostalgia + bad movie (in my opinion) = no fun.
" The Proposition. "that is a pretty hardcore movie. Australian Western brutality
I agree with any of the Sergio Leone "Man with no Name" Trilogy films but by far the best western ever is Leone's magnum opus "Once Upon A Time In the West". It's long but so freakin' epic it will blow your mind. When you find out at the end why Charles Bronson (who is a consummate badass in the film) has been wearing a harmonica around his neck the whole time: holy crap! Also, nice guy Henry Fonda is a complete sociopath in the movie, way against type.
All you really need to know about the movie is this: In the first scene a trio of bad guys wait for Bronson to arrive by train. He is the only passenger who gets off and they face off across the tracks. Bronson asks if they brought a horse for him and they reply, "Nope, we only brought three and there's three of us" to which Bronson replies "You brought two too many" before commencing with the lead poisoning! Ohhh..seriously it's so epic, as big as the west it depicts. Leone and his musical partner Morricone are incredible.
Although Tombstone and Silverado are also awesome.
"3:10 to Yuma is a new good one. "it was pretty good, and the newest one I can think of that was so. They really need to make more Westerns, it is a dying genre. Maybe Jonah Hexx will be okay.

" @ToadRunner said:Yes, that is why I made the title what it is :P" best western is my favorite hotel "Beat me to it. "
@FireBurger:
It is really long...
Clint Eastwood films only for me...
Unforgiven is still probably the most true to reality ever done
but for pure western fashion fun:
The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly is near perfect
High Plains Drifter is fucking BADASS

" If you like westerns you should check out the tv series Deadwood. "shut up ya cocksucker
Unforgiven is the best western ever made. Eastwood is one bad mother-fucker in the last 10 minutes of that movie(After he down's that bottle of whiskey). Plus I think it's Gene Hackman's best film too.
Frankly I love "Unforgiven." My boss/good friend made me watch a whole bunch of Westerns before I watched Unforgiven, but that was an amazing movie. If not that, I really liked High Plains Drifter because of how unique it was. Clint Eastwood>John Wayne.
The Assassin of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford is beautiful but can seem long if you get bored easily. I just got to West Elizabeth in the game and it reminded me of some parts of the movie.

"He shoulda armed himself if he was gonna decorate his bar with my friend..." That was a great "Oh SHIT!" moment, when Eastwood's character broke the seal on that booze and started drinking. You just knew SOMEone was gonna fucking die.

"Horrible movie in my opinion and yes I thought i was boring and I'm a huge western fan. I watched all 8 hours of Lonesome Dove so it wasn't the length that got me lol.
anything clint eastwood. not a huge western fan myself considering i had to grow up around that shit. but u cant deny clint owned some faces.
Watch McClintock for some old fashion Western camp humor (John Wayne).
The Shootest and The Man Who Shot LIberty Valance are both great John Wayne and James Stewart dramas.
The Rooster Cogburn series that Wayne did are some other favorites of mine.
Most of Clint Eastwood's best have been mentioned, but these are must watch:
A Fist Full of Dollars
A Few Dollars More
The Good, The Bad, And The Ugly
High Plains Drifter
Pale Rider
The Outlaw Jose Wales
The Unforgiven
This is not an opinion thread. There is a right and wrong answer, that correct answer is "The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly."
Since the classics are covered I would suggest 3:10 to Yuma or the recently Screened reviewed The Good, The Bad, The Weird, yes it is Korean but its good.
I really liked Unforgiven though when you really look at it it's more of an anti-western movie. The Good, the Bad, and The Ugly was a hell of a film and still stands tall as one of the best westerns of all time. As far my "personal" favorite i really liked Tombstone, especially since it's got Sam Elliot in it. Val Kilmer as Doc Holiday is easily his best role and you can't deny how badass Kurt Russel is in that movie.
