Valorian Endymion's GOTY 2021 List

I guess it that time of the year again. I maybe do an extent write-up later on.

List items

  • The best way to describe SRW 30, is that is sort of miracle, maybe even two miracles rolled in to one, in one hand, you have the likely nightmare that was to get all the licenses for both shows and music to be on the same game, in the other you have a western release too.

With that said, SRW 30 have some akin to the passion of fanfic, where the creator spend lots of time trying to figure how all those franchises could coexist together and this is one of the major joys of the game, watching all those characters having banters with one another.

  • With a much better pace (at least compared to Zestiria) while also being a gorgeous game, Arise is really good.

  • On the surface, Original might look like a lesser version of Gothic, but there is a lot more here that it looks, from lots of cool ideas, such very lite "nemesis system", a sort of more open world and structure and more quests.

  • I already talked about Stranger, and Revisited is, much like the name suggest, an improved version with new features, meanwhile, Savior is a new adventure, which feature a lot of cool new concepts, or play with old ones in a more high fantasy style of jrpg.

  • I have one day to sit down and write about Humankind, but here is a short version of what I have been thinking: It is a very good civilization type of 4X, however, while the most immediate comparisons would be with Civ, Humankind, often feels like a more fleshed out version of another game, Call to Power (which was also a Civ style of game), due the emphasis on systems and in player self-expression, however certain aspects does not work very well, such as diplomacy. But the city building and expansion element have this almost zen like feeling to them.

  • Much like Field of Glory, what this game does amazingly is capture the sense of drama of battle, while also introducing some new elements.

  • This was a nice surprise, it is a bit hard to describe as sort of "Diablo meet Mount and Blade", I really recommend check this one out.

  • The easiest way to describe Gladius is that it is a 4X with no diplomacy, and that almost do the trick, however, Gladius is also almost a more traditional wargame, as position, front lines and other elements weight heavily. The game, captures the atmosphere of 40K pretty well, despite the limited budget, while also being a very challenging.

  • Of the Total War Saga titles, Troy might be the best, even before the Mythos dlc, it runs so smooth that it is hard to believe, the only issue, which is much of an issue, is that by trying to stand between both being more historical and fantasy at the same time, leave it in complicated spot, as it can feel weak in either side. However, the Mythos dlc, sort solves this by just going straight to the myths.

  • "It is almost harvesting season", I am really enjoying how the game is shaping it up.
