The Game of the Year List of the Top 10 of the Games Played in 2015.

2015 was a great year for big video games, and I played none of em.

List items

  • The world's style and substance cemented itself as one of my absolute favourites in fiction.

The gameplay picked up where the first left off, carrying forward that frantic, frenetic, and gleefully challenging action, while still managing to feel fair throughout.

It's hard to separate the first from the second. In retrospect it seems like a story plucked out from the spliced narrative of Wrong Number and told in isolation. Taken as a whole, Hotline Miami is probably among my all-time favourite video games.

    And that music, good god.

  • Whoa, hey, what's this doing here?

I enjoyed Skyrim when it came out, but revisited it when I wanted to play an open-world melee game and fucking haaaaaaaaaated it (turns out Dragon's Dogma was what I was looking for).

In excitement for Fallout 4--which almost certainly wouldn't have run well on my PC--I reinstalled Skyrim. I went into it resolving to see if it could be enjoyed for what it was, and also to just dick around in the open world.

I had a ton of fun with it. I'm still playing it. It's pretty great.

  • This game is delight incarnate

  • This game is punchy as fuck. The objectives, streamlined character building, and simple addition of mounts, makes everything feel so much brisker than other MOBAs.

Shorter matches and constant action makes it easier and more satisfying to play in short bursts too.

  • A story about creativity, creative control, and criticism. Somewhat overt towards the end, or at least more personal, it was still one of the most fascinating things I've played in a good while.

  • I didn't play Until Dawn, but the amount of fun I've had watching and engaging with other people playing it makes it a difficult candidate to ignore.

  • More of a co-op dungeon runner than regular open-world MMO, it gave me the sort of jump in/jump out gameplay I was looking for. Also has a fun character customization system where you can be an ice mage in a slick suit with silly shades and a beret.

Sadly, I never got around to unlocking that sweet witch class that used exploding crows. This one seems like it'd be a good fit on consoles, so here's to hoping it makes the jump.

  • I absolutely hated this game when I first played it. Decided to give it another go this year, and after rejiggering the controls some, everything clicked.

Easily among the best third-person shooting in any video game. Story and style are still nothing to write home about, but whaddayagonnado.

  • I do love me some first-person platforming, provided the movement itself is up to task of course. DeadCore's got that, plus some light puzzle elements mixed in for good measure.

  • There's not much to do in this galaxy, but space shotgunning criminals to the sound of space trucker tunes was still a good time for a spell.
