Best of 2021

This has been the year of deckbuilders, didn't think there would be so many that I've had more than my fill. Looking forward to playing the new Far Cry. Surprised a new King's Bounty and Disciples are coming out, a bit concerned about them perhaps having fairly significant reworked systems. Time will tell, over half way thru the year so far. I've managed to ignore new consoles, always preferring pc, but I suspect I'll be strongly tempted to get a PS5 firstly for Horizon Zero Dawn's sequel - really would like a release to pc in quick order vs years late.

Years approaching the holidays now, and so much for Horizon Forbidden West this year (don't need that ps5 yet thankfully as they are difficult to acquire). Fortunately a ton of great games have released now. Plenty to check out. Ended up being a surprisingly good year considering Covid managed to stick around another year causing havoc.

Dysmantle is my number 7 choice, but it's missing from GB db so I couldn't place it on this list. Now onto 2022, looks to be a busy year (at least early on, a lot of releases).

List items

  • Great game, assuming you enjoy roguelite mechanics and first person shooters. The game has random gear drops with tiered colored loot, keep playing to improve your loadout.

Additionally it has puzzles that need solving to progress the story forward allow you to play detective. Not too complicated though thanks to the progress tracking, so you don't have to write down notes to safe and other random codes, it will auto input those for you and the few times it doesn't you can review quest objectives for them.

I enjoy random loot games and this game fuels that addiction, additionally I love power games and this game has 4 that can be modified by 2 slots each. You pick 2 at mission start - you have to acquire them first. Another thing I really enjoy with this game is the setting/environment/world, if you enjoyed Dishonor this has a fascinating world in the way that did. I enjoy trying out various power, trinket combos and seeing how I can miss with the enemies and invaders. Many combinations to try.

As an adrenaline fueler it has 1 invader randomly invade your game until killed, you set whether invader is anyone, a friend, or bot. Kill the invader once and they are gone for that mission. Playing the game as the invader is enjoyable, but with more flaws then playing the solo campaign as it takes a few minutes to get into a game (a bit too long) and if you get killed once you have a too lengthy wait again (with nothing aside from gear inspection to do while waiting - a bot colt would be ideal while waiting). Additionally it randomly gives you gear that isn't useful as only a hunter (includes drops that only serves solo play well, versus differentiating between the 2 modes). It's an amazing extra, that is a bit fascinating, especially considering the time it must have taken to add that to an otherwise solo game.

There's a lot more to this game then I thought pre-release. I've had a great time in this world abusing the poor enemies that stand in my way in so many interesting ways.

  • I hate a couple core changes to the franchise and hope they are one offs for this installment (ammo type rock/paper system, gear vs skilltree). Yet it makes it high on this years list due to the memorable characters and stories littered around the world.

There are a huge variety of characters you will encounter many with entertaining stories. This makes the world feel a bit more real (and certainly interesting) as it's not full of copy/pasted islanders, it's a diverse population.

The ammo system is utter crap as you spec your ammo type at crafting tables, not in combat. Not that it would be much better to do so in combat as you would have to inspect each individual and change the ammo for that 1 kill then rinse repeat over and over while in frantic combat distracting from the crazy chaos. Fortunately, at least in initial release, armor piercing ammo is a good compromise dealing fine damage across enemy soldiers. For vehicles however you will need to use blasting or emp ammo.

Much like the ammo system, the gear system is frustrating forcing you to equip gear for the circumstances you encounter - fortunately you can change gear at any time and the game pauses while you do so (unlike the ammo system). It's annoying having to constantly pause combat to access a gear menu to swap out gear as you're being assaulted by fire or when being attacked with explosives or when needing to shoot down a helicoptor or when needing to run or .. UGH having to constantly access the gear menu versus always having a chosen skill available really distracts from the fun and smooth game flow leading one to eventually ignore this system when possible (able to survive without changing gear).

Hopefully going forward in the series the diverse characters and stories continue, but the ammo and skilled gear systems go. I always looked forward to gaining some xp to unlock a new skill action, the gear system doesn't give me that excitement which was the main draw to past games.

  • I've maxed progression on characters in under 50 hours, not sure how much more appeal this game has for me until new ones come out or some new progression system. Really had a blast in the hours I have put in though. Amazing Deckbuilder, my favorite of the year and there are many good ones this year. The overhead map with random loot drops and many options to customize your build really make this one stand out.

  • More of the same and that's great. More characters to play this time, wish they unlocked a bit more often instead of waiting until campaign is beaten. Few War Mode maps with larger hordes and special weapons.

  • This is what I had hoped and expected King's Bounty 2 would have been. Odd as it's a bit of a break from past Disciples games - if this had been called King's Bounty no one would have batted an eye.

It's been a lot of fun building my army and getting loot. The combat is just complex enough without going overboard. In some ways it's a bit simplistic (no overwatch attacks to worry about and you can move out of melee freely), which I find enjoyable as it's not the norm any more (plenty of other games to play with complicated rulesets).

I'm thrilled with the game, but I definitely feel bad for those expecting a Disciples sequel, which has been a long time coming, as this isn't the Disciples you knew.

  • I really enjoying shooting baddies with a powerful shotgun and this delivers on that thrill. The crazy characters are entertaining. The story ehh .. not really for me, but the craziness is fun and easy to enjoy. It's cool how RE has evolved, I like that Village feels a bit familiar yet very much it's own. Props to the RE developers putting out something fresh yet still deserving of being called RE.

  • Really enjoy this one, but it's got some bugs, hope they fix it soon. A small part RPG and a larger part ARPG.

  • All the Epic store shannanigans early on with bringing over past maps, got me to delay my purchase until I was able to grab it at a significant discount during Epic sale and by then the issues had been sorted out and not backed up. Really love how they allow you to play old missions/maps on an updated engine, really special feature rarely seen and I love it. Just restarted from beginning season 1 and slowly progressing and having fun. This is basically more Hitman 2.

  • Finally a Metroid game I got excited for and have enjoyed, though at times the difficulty has frustrated me or at least the lack of ways to work around the difficulties. I certainly wouldn't mind more future Metroid games in this older school fashion.

  • Enjoyable looter shooter, have to see if this can hang on, lots of more games to come out this year. I do hope this genre can evolve further and quit looking like another Destiny.
