Top 10 Video Games Played in 2017

This is just a list of my top ten Video Games I played. This is where you can learn about what I think of each games: https://www.giantbomb.com/profile/remilia_seven_fangs/lists/games-beaten-during-2017/359088/ .

I know there are errors in this since I was going by memory so I do apologize for that. Next year I will do this after each game instead of waiting.

List items

  • Honerable Mention

Rain: A very enjoyable Playstation Camp project that uses excellent art styles and aspects to allow the player to go through a story with a unique idea. The game uses the rain to allow the player to puzzle their way past enemies without fighting. It is well worth trying out.

Favorite Character(s)/Bosses/Enemies: Baby Metroid, Robot Boss, Ridley

Baby Metroid: The best part of the game is the last part where you get your little baby Metroid and it (she) follows you around. The poor little thing is so cute and actually useful while you finish exploring and gathering your upgrade items. The baby Metroid is even useful during the Ridley fight at the end of the game.

Robot Boss: While the parts leading up to this boss where not as enjoyable, since I died many times to it, I actually did enjoy the boss fight itself. It used a lot of mechanics that were introduced through the game up to that point and made the fight more tactical. The fight had different phases and gave the player something to think about instead of just randomly shooting at the enemy.

Ridley: Like Ganon in a Zelda game, Ridley just has to show up and ruin all of Samus’ fun. Since I never played the original and there were so few bosses in the game, I actually thought that he would not show up, but when he did I was actually very happy (until he attacked my baby).

Least Favorite Character(s)/Bosses/Enemies: The Dinosaur Metroid Mini Bosses

Dinosaur Metroid Mini Bosses: The Metroid start to possess stronger enemies as you make your way through the game and the later possessed creatures are really the worse. Granted I pretty much was saying that with every possessed creature. I wanted to fight the previous one after each new one. The dinosaur ones are even worse with their high HP values, ability to spit acid or fire at you and their slightly hard parry attack animations. I did manage to make it through all of them in the end.

Favorite Moment(s): Getting your baby Metroid, Ridley Fight

Baby Metroid: While this pretty much happens at the last hour of your gameplay, maybe less if you do not need to gather items, this is probably the best moment. Samus actually takes pity on the poor little baby and instead of killing it off; she decides to bring it along with her. The baby Metroid even helps you out when you need some aid.

Ridley Fight: This fight was a little hard at first, but I did eventually figure out his pattern and made it through the fight. He shows up at the end trying to kill off your poor little baby Metroid, only for Samus’ mother instincts to kick in and defend her child. The baby Metroid even helps by draining Ridley’s power and strength and giving it to Samus. The fight may be in a couple phases, but they do not vary that much from each other. Either way it was still a very enjoyable fight.

Least Favorite Moment(s): Robot Boss Corridor of Death, Lack of Bosses

Corridor of Death: The Robot Boss chases you throughout his lair as you try to navigate his corridors. He uses his drill arms to destroy everything in his path, including you if you are not fast enough, and it kind of requires a lot of touch screen action/memory to make it through the corridor. While he does not appear after you make it through once so you can collect the items you missed, the whole ordeal is just a little too much for me.

Lack of Bosses: I never really played the original and did not really know that the game had few bosses and was mostly just a Metroid extermination game. I figured it would have been like the other Metroid games with some bosses per area, but it was not like that. Yet, the lack of bosses did not completely ruin the game and the possessed Metroid did provide some interesting challenges (until the dinosaur ones).

    Favorite Areas/Dungeons/Level(s): Forest/Water Zone

Forest/Water Zone: I do not remember which Zone number this is, later in the game, and you do not have all the abilities to explore the region yet. You can sort of explore the upper areas and some of the water area, but not all of them. You then get more abilities which allow you to explore the area. I personally just love forests in video games and areas with rivers, lakes or water areas.

Least Favorite Areas/Dungeons/Level(s): Dinosaur Boss Rooms:

Dinosaur Mini Boss Rooms: I really could not come up with a least favorite area, but I do not like these Dinosaur Mini Bosses and might as well consider them my least favorite areas.

Favorite Characters/Bosses/Enemies: Mega Man 8 Roll, Splash Woman, Mega Man 8 Bosses

Mega Man 8 Roll: I really like her design in this game and even though she has such a minor job in the game, I just really think she is cute.

Splash Woman: The first, and hopefully not last, female robot master boss. She takes the battle underwater and uses her trident to fight Mega Man with her nautical powers. She also reminds me of Nami from League of Legends and I like Nami.

Mega Man 8 Bosses: This is the game I played when I was younger so I may be a little biased on it. I do like this game and the designs of the characters as well as some of the voice acting (not all). I really like this game the most, but I did enjoy playing through all of the games in the collection (maybe not nine as much).

Least Favorite Characters/Bosses/Enemies: Slash Man, Strike Man (Buster Only), Mega Man 9, Mega Man 7 Wily

Slash Man: Even with his weakness I still had trouble figuring out a good pattern for him and really did not enjoy dealing with him. He is not completely terrible, but his randomness was just not very enjoyable.

Strike Man (Buster Only): Physics does not work this way AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH. He is really not that hard with his weakness and with some practice is not bad when fighting him with the buster, but I struggled very much against him.

Mega Man 9: These bosses were not really that easy even with their weakness. I did hear that this game was going to be hard, but I did not know it was going to be rage quitting hard. Though I did manage to survive the game somehow.

Mega Man 7 Wily: There is a pattern, but I could not figure it out. I just tanked through the whole fight with extra armor on and still barely managed to beat him. I really wish I could figure out his pattern and make it through without using so many Etanks.

Favorite Moments: Mega Man 8, Splash Woman Fight, Beating each game

Mega Man 8: I already said that I played this game the most when I was younger and I still enjoy playing it. I enjoy cute, colorful and easy games and this is pretty much one of those kinds. I understand the downsides of the game, VO, but I can get past that to enjoy the game itself.

Splash Woman Fight: The first woman robot in the main ten Mega Man games, there have been some women robots bosses in side Mega Man projects, and probably one of the more interesting fights. While I did not really fight her with the buster, for too long, it was still interesting to see other enemies joining the fight and making the player think over who to target. Plus I like women characters in video games.

Beat each game: The fact that I was able to beat each game, sure I needed extra armor mode for all but eight, was enough to make me happy. I did have some rage quitting moments and some hatred for Mega Man games after each one, except eight, but I was able to get past that and continue to play through each game. It was worth trying these later games and seeing what they did to the genera.

Least Favorite Moments: Most of Mega Man 9, Strike Man, Slash Man, Mega Man 7 Wily

I am just going to put them all together since the reason is pretty much the same. They each had some mechanic that I felt was too hard to overcome and ended up either using Extra Armor Mode or spamming through E-Tanks in order to get past them. I will say that overcoming them did eventually make me happy and I felt like I accomplished something. Mega Man 9 was just hard to do buster only, not that I was intentionally trying to do so.

Favorite Local: Mega Man 8 Intro Stage, Water Stages, Outer Space

Mega Man 8 Intro Stage: Obviously I like this game. I like the music for this stage and it is a great tutorial stage for the game. It is very enjoyable and works well with teaching the player what they will be encountering in future stages.

Water Stages: I just find something calming about water stages in video games, and most of them in this collection were enjoyable to play through. Sure there may have been some tough spots, but each one was still enjoyable to explore and play through.

Outer Space: Most of these involved Wily fights, which I did not enjoy as much, but I also have an interest in Space as a scientist. I just enjoy being able to explore other worlds or outer space in general since it is like a new area to explore and learn about. Galaxy Man’s was probably the best outer space stage in this collection.

Least Favorite Local: Mega Man 8 Wily Stage 1, Yoku Block Stages

MM8 Wily Stage 1: Oh my, a Mega Man 8 stage even though I love the game. Yes this stage was always what made me stop playing the game when I was younger. I did eventually get past it, but I still dread playing through it even to this day. I have gotten better at it, but I really do wish it were not as bad.

Yoku Block Stages: The magical appear and disappear blocks that haunt Mega Man players. These things have never been enjoyable to deal with and when you try to play without Rush Jet or whatever they give you, it is never enjoyable. They are not terrible with patience and pattern learning, but they get to be a problem sometimes.

Favorite Game in the Collection: Mega Man 8

    Favorite Character(s): Undine, Alphie, Muffet

Undine: Cooking with Undine was probably one of my favorite moments in the game and she has a very good pirate style musical score. I did not care too much for the fight itself, but the music was enough to save the fight itself. Also she just has a way with cooking, and is nice to Alphie.

Alphie: Our smart, anime loving scientist who created the robot that tries to kill you while you traverse the Core. She is a little shy and scared of telling people that she lied to them. She has a love for Undine and eventually does find a way to get closer to her lover, but she is still a bit shy and secretive.

Muffet: Best Boss Fight. Not only is the music really enjoyable, the actual fight itself is innovative and amazing. Since it is a spider’s web you are battling on, the character is limited on movement and with the different kinds of attacks coming from all directions, it can be a little hard. Yet, I really enjoyed this fight the most.

Least Favorite Character(s): Flowy, Fire Rope Monster, Determination

Flowy: The character who tries to be your ally, but only wants to kill you and take over the world. He is evil from the first moment you meet him to the last moments of his fight against you. Who knew such a little flower could be so much trouble for one little boy?

Fire Rope Monster: Not really a big problem, but I had trouble dodging his attacks and kept dying against this creature when I was doing my pure pacifist run. I eventually got past it, somehow, but I do not wish to run into one of them anymore.

Determination: Apparently the theme of the whole story or something like that. Yes, I eventually found the determination to get through a pacifist run of the game, but for goodness gracious I had a lot of problems with that. I do not want to be determined if I have to suffer just to make it five steps into a game.

Favorite Moments: Cooking with Undine, Muffet Boss Fight, Pacifist Run Ending

Cooking with Undine: That is not how I make spaghetti, but if she wants to make it that way I will not try to stop her from doing so. Her theme song is also very enjoyable and adds to the excitement of her trying to become friends with you. This was an enjoyable scene to interact with.

Muffet Boss Fight: I kind of explained this already, so I will not go into much detail. I just really liked the idea of the fight and the music and the tiny little spiders with signs.

Pacifist Run Ending: HURRAY, I beat the game. Do not ask me to play again. I did not mind this game that much, but I think I was just not in the mood to play it and that might have ruined my experience a little. That and having someone push me into “Determination” to try doing a Pacifist run. At least the ending was happy and everyone was able to continue to live together, or so I hope and that the humans did not just kill them all when they showed up.

Least Favorite Moments: Flowy, Not getting the Pacifist Ending, Determination

Flowy: I kind of summed this up above and yes he is not as enjoyable to deal with. I will say he was not too bad, but I do understand why people may not like this little plant.

Non Pacifist Ending: I was trying to do a Pacifist Run on my first play through, but the comments were vague and I ended up failing. I was not happy with that and it kind of ruined my interest in the game as well as lowered my “Determination.” Though I was glad to actually play through this game and eventually get the true happy ending.

    Determination: AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH (Screams)

Favorite Local: Snow Areas, Spider Realm, Alphie’s Lab

Snow Areas: The puzzles, monsters and music during this area were enjoyable and I did find some good laughs here with Papyrus and Sans. I also enjoy snow as long as I do not have to drive in it. It had a nice touch of calm and happiness to the region.

Spider Realm: Muffet is the BEST. Her and her spiders were cute and enjoyable and while her plan was a little creepy, I was happy to fight her. She made the fight enjoyable not just because of her mechanic but also with her politeness and attitude. Plus she has tea and cakes for you. 

Alphies Lab: Anime lovers are warned. This is the lab of the future and all who bow down to anime would love to own it. Plus I am a science based person and to be able to have a lab to do experiments would be enjoyable. I just would not build a killer robot.

Least Favorite Local: Core, Flowy’s Home

Core: I already mentioned a monster from this area that I did not enjoy going through and I had problems with other monsters as well. I did not mind it too much, but I was struggling during my Pacifist run and that kind of ruined it for me. I also do not like fire based locations as much.

Flowy’s Home: I do not know if he actually has a home, but wherever he forces you to fight him at is not an enjoyable place to be. He uses the power of the souls and ends up becoming a being that is very hard to deal with. I do not know why a small little flower is so powerful, but there is probably a lesson to be learned from this experience.

  • 6)

Favorite Character(s): Ciel, Zero, Leviathon, Harpuia

Ciel: The scientist and leader of the Rebellion Force that is trying to stop the government from destroying Reploids. She has a kind heart for all beings and creatures and only wants everyone to be able to live happily. She may not be the best leader, but she does her best as a scientist to overcome the problems that she faces.

Zero: The main protagonist of the series and the warrior who helps Ciel in her quest to save Reploids from the government’s destruction. He is a strong warrior who uses his Saber to overcome many obstacles and protect those he trusts. He may seem a little cold, but he only means best for everyone.

Leviathon: The female water guardian of X’s who is trying to protect Reploids and humans from any outside forces. She is very interested in Zero and always gives her all when they fight against each other. She may look cute, but has a very dangerous spirit to her. She is more of a calm and calculative fighter like their leader.

Harpuia: The wind guardian and leader of X’s who does not understand Zero’s thought process. They should be on the same side, but Harpuia does not believe that Zero is doing the right thing and tries to do things his own way. He is very strong and calculative like Leviathon, but does not want anyone else to get in his way.

    Least Favorite Character(s): Dr. Weil

Dr. Weil: The main antagonist of the Zero series and the eventual leader of the government. He was trying to work on ways to separate humans and Reploids and eventually caused a war between them that led to his exile. He would eventually come back when the time was right to take over for X and try to destroy both humans and Reploids. His plan would eventually fail when Zero takes him down for good.

Favorite Moment(s): MMZ 3, Omega Fight, Dr. Weils Demise

Mega Man Zero 3: Probably the one that I liked the most out of the four games and the one with a better handle on the story and set up for the series. It was very enjoyable to play through and gave me a good feel for what to expect in the coming game.

Omega Fight: The final boss of MMZ3 and the true form of Zero. Turns out that the Zero you play as is only a fake body of the original and not the savior everyone thinks he is. Yet, even Fake Zero fights through his feelings and overcome Omega in the battle to stop Dr. Weil.

Dr. Weils Demise: I really did not like this guy one bit and was glad that he was able to go down for good. He causes trouble for you starting in MMZ2 and as you advance through the series you grow to hate him more and more. He definitely deserved his end.

Least Favorite Moment(s): Zero’s Death, MMZ2 Commander, Dr. Weil Moments

Zero’s Death: Not all things can have a good ending and this is one of them. Sadly Zero, fake Zero, dies at the end of MMZ4 in a fiery death from outer space. He risked his life to help and protect Reploids and humans alike and it was very sad to see him gone. Ciel was also very upset with this turn of events.

MMZ2 Commander: I forgot his name, but he is not a very knowledgeable person and kind of reckless. He only wants power for himself and he wishes to take on the world with an indescribable power. He eventually falls to Zero after gaining the power he searched for, but not before killing off many good innocent people.

Dr. Weil Moments: As I stated, he is a terrible person and all events with him are not very enjoyable. He only is around to say mean things to Zero and Ciel and then kills off many people to get what he wants. He is pretty much the power hungry figure in this series.

Favorite Local: Mega Man Zero 3 and 4

These two games actually give more diversity in locations and different challenges to overcome. They both provide some interesting ideas for getting through the stages and even make the series more enjoyable as the game goes on. I just wish the whole series could have had the same touch that these two games had.

Least Favorite Local: Mega Man Zero and Zero 2

These two games pretty much take place in the same location with almost the same mission zones. They also have multiple fights in the same mission zone and just tend to be a little bland. I can understand they were not sure this series would make it and so they had a limited budget, but this kind of felt a little poor. Yet, it improved for the later games and that was a good thing.

  • 5) Not the ULTRA Series

Favorite Characters: Acerola, Lana, Mallow, Lillie, Hau

Acerola is an ex royal whose family once ruled in the lands of Alola and now she is the captain of the Ghost Trials. Probably one of the more enjoyable trials in the game and one of the most interesting characters in the game, Acerola just has a pleasant mannerism and loves to help others. While she is not being a Captain, she helps at the Aether orphanage house and even likes to play around with the Elite four.

Lana is the Water Trial captain and loves to fish. Her and her family is a long line of fishers who bring in fresh fish for Mallow and other cooks who order from them. She has a small mischief side to her that shows in the trial and she like to enjoy a little fun with her trial goers. She may not be as confident as other captains, but she puts her best effort in to help those who are taking her trial.

Mallow is from a family of chefs who likes to have a little fun with the trial contestants. She makes you find ingredients that will be needed to find the Totem Pokemon and then asks you to cook using these ingredients. She is very connected with the other captains and even the Kahuna of Akala Island, and she has an interesting way of keeping the player on their toes with this hide and seek, gathering trial.

Lillie is the assistant of the professor and the daughter of Lusamine (who is in charge of Aether Paradise). She is not very confident in herself and with the help of the player grows to become a more mature version of herself. The story actually feels like it follows Lillie’s growth instead of the player characters adventures. She is a very enjoyable companion to have along on the trip.

Hau is the grandson of Kahuna Hala and one of the happiest go lucky rivals in the whole Pokemon series. It was always a joy to fight him in a battle or even to see him on your adventure. He never lets anything get him down and even seems to just brighten up with each loss. He is probably one of the few Rivals I did not mind running into and I was glad when he was around.

Least Favorite Characters: Possessed Lusamine, Team Skull, Gusma’s Golisopod

Lusamine is Lillie’s mother and she is obsessed with the Ultra Beasts and their realm. A failed attempt leaves her husband lost forever and poisons her mentally. The poison eventually takes over her and she does everything she can to get the Ultra Beasts for herself no matter whom or what gets in her way. She is not terrible as a character, but in her possessed form she says belittling things to her daughter that makes me truly hate her as a mother and character.

Team Skull is the rambunctious group that is loitering around causing trouble for the habitants of Alola. Their outfits, way of talking and theme are not really something I care for and I really think they are my least favorite team so far. They have some interesting characters in the ranks, but as a whole they are just not my cup of tea.

Guzma’s Golisopod: This Pokemon comes from the Wimpod Pokemon and is a terror in battle. It is very strong compared to make other Pokemon and has an ability that ejects it from battle when its HP drops below half. So it is best to defeat it in one go or expect for it to return in the future. I had a lot of trouble with this thing and will be adding a Pokemon to take this thing down fast.

Favorite Moments: Lillie’s Revival, Ultra Space, Ghost Trial, Grass Trial

Lillie’s Revival: So she does not actually die, she just becomes more confident in herself and starts to become a stronger person. After you beat her mother and rescue Nebby from Ultra Space she decides that she has to become a stronger person and go on her own adventure to do so. She eventually goes off to Kanto, probably the Switch game, to try and cure her mother as well as become a stronger individual.

Ultra Space: While this is a short sequence which mostly just consists of defeating Possessed Lusamine, this is still a cool place to go and the different Ultra Beasts make the land worth traversing. The battle with Lusamine is actually interesting since her Pokemon have angry faces on them when they are battling and that adds a touch of possession to the fight. Plus Lusamine looks really cute/cool in her Squid form.

Ghost/Grass Trials: These are probably the more interesting trials in the game. While they all consist of a similar set of rules and events, these two add mechanics like Ghost Photography or Medicine Treasure Hunting to lure out the Totem Pokemon. They actually make you feel like you are doing something other than just battling your way through the trial.

Least Favorite Moments: Most Trials, Team Skull, Obvious Lack of content

While the Trials are an interesting idea, and in technicality gyms were pretty much all the same with minor differences, these Trials felt pretty bland. The idea of the Totem Pokemon made for some strategy and tactics, but almost every trial was walk forward, battle, walk forward, battle and repeat. This just felt boring since it was not a trainer and was only one Pokemon to fight. At least with gyms you had trainers with more than one Pokemon most of the time.

I already mentioned that I do not care too much for Team Skull. They just do not work well with me and I kind of do not like dealing with them. They are an interesting idea and they do at least add some stereotype to the game, but it just does not do anything for me. They really do not have much identity or interesting moments. A few admins or higher ranked are interesting to fight, but they are rare occurrences.

Those who played through the game, and are playing through Ultra series now, will tell you there was obvious lack of content. Usually there is a Victory road before the Elite Four, but in this there is a short cave with only one trainer and no other real obstacles. There are other areas or events that felt very lacking and while reading the Ultra series guide I can see that they did cut out a lot of content from this game. If this is going to be the normal, then I may need to start waiting for the later games to come out.

Favorite Local: Malie City, Paniola Ranch, Ultra Space, Akala Island

Malie City is an Eastern inspired city, Japan, which has a really cool design, garden and the music in this city (day and night) is actually really good. It also goes back to Gen one with the Nugget Bridge idea and brings some nostalgia for fans. It is a very enjoyable location to visit.

Paniola Ranch is a country side ranch that has one of the best songs of the game. The music fits the location and because I am a country person I kind of feel very connected to this location. I really enjoyed being here and playing around with the farm animals on my adventure.

I already talked a little about Ultra Space but it was a very enjoyable place to visit. The graphics and style of the area just made it feel like I was exploring an alien planet. The Ultra Beasts roaming around in the back also added some life to the location as you worked your way to battle Lusamine.

Akala Island is the second island of the Alola region and probably one of my favorite areas in the game. This area is full of lush nature and has some interwoven human settlements here and there. The Pokemon you can find her are useful for the future islands and the natural settings are very enjoyable to visit on your adventure. It also contains some of the more interesting trials and characters of the game.

Least Favorite Local: Poni Island, Po Town, Aether Paradise (Invasion)

Poni Island is a very baron location with mostly dry, mountainous canyons and very few human settlements. This place is only partially explored during the main adventure and then becomes more open when you finish the story and can move on to the post game content. It is not a very welcoming location, but is also pretty long with many trainers or high level Pokemon to work through. Feels more like Victory Road than anything else.

Po Town is the home of Team Skull and one of the dreariest places in the game. It is always raining and the place is trashed from Team Skull’s activities. While the Kahuna also lives in the town to try and keep an eye on Team Skull, he does not seem to do very much to stop Team Skull from causing trouble. It is a very low quality location and fills the stereotype of a ghetto.

Aether Paradise (Invasion): While the first visit is slightly welcoming and you learn about what the Aether Foundation is, the invasion is not very welcoming and kind of harsh. You have very few allies willing to help you and with a whole island of scientist and researchers who are against you, it is not a very good place to set foot. Plus you have two strong trainers to deal with during this turn of events and they do not good down without a fight.

  • 4) Cave Story + Version

    Favorite Character(s): Curly, Quote, Balrog

Curly is the female robot/android character that Quote finds on his journey and is very talkative. Unlike Quote who is silent she actually has some things to say during her play through of the game, which adds some interesting moments. She also has a very hard Final Cave segment that I really dreaded, but eventually beat.

Quote is the male robot/android character that is the main protagonist of the game. He may be silent, but he does seem like the kind of hero who will do what is needed to save those in need. He has a really cool design and has the best weapon in the game (if you choose to get it). He is also very enjoyable to rescue when you play as Curly and become the hero of the game.

Balrog is one of the doctor’s minions and the muscle of the group. He is not very intelligent and all his fights are very simple. He tries his best to make his supervisors happy, but he never seems to really be able to do the job right. He is always picked on and kind of pushed around to do all the work for others. He just adds some comedy and decent game play to this wonderful game.

Least Favorite Character(s): Doctor, Final Cave Boss

The doctor’s main objective is to take over the floating island and use the power to destroy the world below. He is the greedy, power hungry human that will do anything to overcome whatever obstacles get in his way. He is not a completely terrible character; he just fits the evil genius stereotype.

While playing as Curly you get a completely different Final Cave and the boss in this cave is a pain. Really the boss is not that problematic, it is the Cave itself. It makes Hell look like an easy walk in the park and then you have a boss afterwards to deal with. This boss took me a while to finally overcome mostly because of the Final Cave itself.

    Favorite Moment(s): The Game

This whole game was very enjoyable and I am glad I played through it. For a game that is pretty old, it has a lot of cool idea, potential and is a very enjoyable project. This is a game that almost everyone should play and will more than likely go down in history as a game that changed generas.

Least Favorite Moment(s): Curly’s Final Cave, Hell

I already mentioned how the Final Cave for Curly’s path is almost as bad, if not worse, than Hell. Either way both of these locations are very hard and not as enjoyable as the rest of the game. These two locations are optional, so you do not have to do them if you are not interested, but they add content to the story and give the player a challenge (and the true ending, which I did not get). With a little more practice I would have gotten through Hell, but I pretty much said that I had enough of the game and left it where I was.

    Local:

I kind of played this game last year and only did a little bit this year to try and get the true ending, so I kind of forgot a bit about this game. Yet, this game also was a very enjoyable game to play and I do recall it had a lot of goo locations that fit well with the game. I do not really think, besides Hell and Curly’s Final Cave, that there were many locations that I hated or really admired. I liked pretty much the whole game and just can not think of a favorite local.

  • 3)

Favorite Character(s): Aile, Prairie, Lurrer, Model ZX, Model L

Aile: The main protagonist, if you choose to play as a female, of the game and a character who has a painful past. She is trying her best to figure out what makes her different form others who survived the invasion of her homeland and is working with Prairie to stop Serpant and his minions.

Prairie: The leader of the resistance force that is trying to learn more about the different Mega Man models and trying to stop Serpant. They have an airship as their headquarters and they fly around trying to protect the populace while researching the Models and their effects. She is a strong individual who takes after her Sister who was killed in a research accident by Serpant.

Lurrer: The first Ice Boss who is a girl attached to an angler fish as a lure. She entices her prey in with her looks and voice and then the fish eats them up when it is too late for them to escape. She apparently does not like the main character and thinks that the main character is only trying to steal her power for them self. She gives you the Model L form which is probably the second best form in the game (my opinion).

Model ZX: The best form in the game, giving the character Ranged attack and close ranged melee attack. This is pretty much a combination of Mega Man X and Zero and this combo makes for enjoyable gameplay. I pretty much only used this form since it gave me two ways of attacking and I could alter my strategy based on how the boss fought. The design and look of the character in this model is also very cool.

Model L: The second best form of the game and the water form. This form allows you to move around under water easier and you even get a glaive that works really well on land or in water. The spinning attack given to you under water makes for an easy way to take down the second Ice Boss and other enemies that might try to attack you.

Least Favorite Character(s): Model F, Serpant

Model F: While this form does give you the fire element to use, it is also kind of useless. Its ability is only useful in one area of the game and even then unless you learned how to use it by accident, you may think you was permanently stuck. It is just not taught to the player how to really use it and it just does not have a good attack range or use, even in boss fights.

Serpant: The main antagonist who is pretty much seeking the power of the models so he can take over the world. He runs a company that is a ruse for his true intentions and does not seem to care for the wellbeing of those weaker and poorer than him. He is an interesting boss to deal with, but has the greed and hunger that most evil bosses in a Mega Man game would normally have.

Favorite Moment(s): Open World Aspect, Music, Model ZX

Open World: This idea works for RPG kind of games or games with big locations, but would it work for a Mega Man game. So it is not completely open world like, but it does have some ideas from that genera and it works very well. It allows the player to explore regions of the world without really having to deal with many loading screens and gets the player right into the action. The main flaw is the location of places since alphabetical order is not how this game works.

The Music for this game is very enjoyable and adds some connection to the location you are traveling through. There are a couple songs I really enjoy and I kind of wish they had a music player in the game to allow players to sit and listen to the music. The forest song is really enjoyable and it even comes back in the final phase of the Serpant fight to add some more nostalgia.

Model ZX as I mentioned before it the best form in the game and gives each player a way to play that works best for them. Whether you want to get up close and slash your way through a boss or fight from a distance with the ranged buster, you will be able to play how you wish. This form allows for different tactics and combos that most other Mega Man games do not offer.

Least Favorite Moments: Map, Some Minor Quests

There are very few things about this game that I do not like, but the Map system is not very enjoyable. While it is not hard to really explore and find where a location is, when you are trying to find J and end up in I instead, you tend to get a little upset that you are not getting where you want to be. While the open world aspect is enjoyable, the map system could have been slightly better.

The quests in the game also make this game enjoyable. Yet, you get a few fetch quests, or hunting/gathering quests that can ruin the game for some people. These are mostly optional, but they can give some interesting boosts and parts that will help strengthen your character. Most of them are easy, but some can get a little annoying.

    Favorite Local: Forest, Ice Lake

Besides the fact that I like forest and water areas in games, the music in both of these locations and the design of the areas actually make these two locations very enjoyable. The game play in these two locations is very enjoyable and I really like what they did with the puzzles, problem solving and hidden items for these locations.

    Least Favorite Local: Zoo, Lab

These two locations had a mechanic that I did not enjoy as much. Whether it was the balloon riding segment in the Zoo or the unending missile strikes of the Lab, these two locations got a lot of my deaths and time. They are not that terrible if you take it slow and use the abilities of the different form, if you have them, but they can be a problem for speedy players or players who are not watching their footing.

    Favorite Characters: 2B, Operator 60, A2, Pods

2B: The main female android character that you play as during this series of events and the slightly strict rule abiding warrior of the game. She seems to be unfriendly and only focuses on the mission at hand, but eventually starts to learn more about emotions and what might be right versus wrong. She is a very kind and helpful individual who wants to protect those she grows close with, but also wants to try and finish her mission with minimal error.

Operator 60: The Yuri factor and Lesbian coordinator of 2B who always has a bubbly, cheerful attitude. She often like to bypass rules and talk with 2B about what is going on down on Earth and how 2B’s day is going along. She finds comfort in 2B and also tries to make 2B more girlish with ideas of accessories and clothing. She may get turned down by her superior, but she always has 2B to help support her in her endeavors.

A2: The rogue, lonely warrior who left Yorha to try and find her own purpose in the world. She is not very friendly and seems to have a hatred for all things. Even when 2B downloads her memory into A2’s database, she still seems to disagree with rules and wants nothing to do with missions. She eventually grows more connecting to others, but still has a small reluctance to get close enough to others.

Pods: The two aids of 2B and 9S that add some comedy to this serious series of events. While they also try to keep their android partners on track and even force them to follow guidelines, they do have some compassion and understanding of others. They eventually grow to learn more about emotions and try to find a happy ending for all involved in the game.

Least Favorite Characters: 9S, Marketing Department

9S: While initially he just seems like a kind guy who is trying to learn more about the world and helping others, he also is a whiny brat who has a sadistic side. He can get a little annoying after a while with his questions and comments about the events happening, but he eventually becomes infected by a virus that turns him into a sadist that tries to kill of A2 and other androids. He does not really mean to be a problem for others; he just ends up becoming a nuisance for the rest of Yorha and the player.

Marketing Department: While this is more a funny meme by now, it also was not really the hardest section for me. I felt some of the other departments afterwards were slightly harder, but this is where the bullet hell section really gets to be a problem. There are way too many names to deal with in this department and then they just want to kill you with their bullets. Still a very interesting boss section and ending game moment.

Favorite Moment(s): SHMUP Sections, Water Boss, Ending Sphere Bosses, Final Credits

SHMUP Sections: I really enjoy Touhou games and games similar to that style of play. So when they had that play style in this game I really enjoyed being able to play through these sections and trying my best not to get hit by bullets (which is easier in this game). The sad part is not really seeing what is happening in the background, which most of the time is not much, but it was not really a big hindrance to the experience.

Water Boss: While you do not actually fight under water, this submarine goliath was lying dormant until something awoke it and the whole sequence is very enjoyable. It starts with some SHMUP moments that lead into actually shooting down the beast with missiles from giant missile launchers. This boss is one of my favorite next to the ending segment duo boss.

Ending Sphere Bosses: This whole section is very enjoyable. Switching between characters fighting these bosses in different ways, either using a flight unit or fighting on land, this whole sequence is just one big boss fight. I really enjoyed when they switched between characters so that you could see how each character makes it to the top of the tower before the final showdown. It was probably my favorite moment in the whole game.

Final Credits: SHMUP HELL! This section was a really interesting idea for this kind of game and actually was fun (up to a point). Being able to take down the creators of the game through a SHMUP segment is often one of the more enjoyable moments in a game and the added bonus of getting help from others who played through the game was also a worthy cause. The music was very enjoyable and when you get suppose from others they add a chorus that makes the player feel like they are a part of the song.

Least Favorite Moment(s): 9S’ breakdown, Final Sphere boss, Limited A2 moments, Limited Operator contact

9S’ Breakdown: I slightly mentioned that 9S gets a virus and eventually becomes mentally uncontrollable. While 9S was not that enjoyable of a character anyway, he became an even worse character when he got infected. He just lost his mind and you could easily tell that things were only going to get worse with him.

Final Sphere Boss: The two spheres that A2 and 9S fight separately combine together and you have to fight them as both A2 and 9S. This is not really a problem until you notice that the game switches characters on you mid fight or even mid combo. Since each one plays differently, this makes the fight not as enjoyable and kind of a nuisance. Luckily the fight is not very hard and you can easily get through the boss in a matter of seconds.

Limited A2 Moments: The game mostly focuses on 2B and 9S and has only a short path for A2. I would have liked to learn more about A2 as a character and how she played as a character, but the limited time you get does not give enough time to connect with her. Sure you get logs and archives to learn about her past and how she is a key figure to the game, but she just does not get enough screen time.

Limited Operator Moments: I need a whole game with Operator 60 talking about her Yuri life or even giving 2B fashion advice and what not. Both operators have some interesting moments and you even get quests from them, but they are really not a key part of the story. I kind of wish there was some more to their conversation than just checkups and minor side conversation.

    Local:

This game was an open world style game and the main local is the city where most of the quests are taken and done. Sure there are side sections and side areas as well, but you are not in them as much as the city. Each local has its ups and downs, but I really can not say one location was so marvelous than another location. I will say that I did not enjoy the Desert area as much as other locations.
