Games Finished 2018

List items

  • 01/01/2018

It's getting a lot of mentions in GOTY lists and discussions. While the "game" is 2-3hours in length and I finished it in one sitting it was well worth the time.

Going back to the family home and exploring the history of the unfortunate Finch family was a joy. Each room in the house told the story of one of the family. Each relative had their own little vignettes with different ways of getting across their personality and story. From a young girl who is hungry and imagines herself as various animals feeding to a comic book level to a fantastic Cannery section where your character is doing a menial job while daydreaming.

I loved the game from start to finish. My main issue with the game is that it is extremely linear and more exploration and any actual puzzles would have been great, but in hindsight the whole point of this is to experience the story at a certain pace and puzzles etc would have distracted it.

Not a great adventure game in the classic sense, but as a story experience it was fab.

    Deathinitve Version

Game was free on the PSN Plus december lineup so was a great bargain for 30+ hours of gameplay.

I remember liking the original when I played it back in 2012 and well deserved it's rep of being Zelda for adults.

The sequel continues the Zelda vibe with God of War type combat. It switches the main character to Death trying to correct what War did in the first game, clear his name and restore humanity.

    [strong]Pros[/strong]

    * Combat is fun. basic strong and light attacks initially seems simple, but with a skill tree and purchasing combos it can get quite deep at times. In the heat of battle though you tend to forget all but your favourite moves and stick with them. The Teleport Slash is very good esp towards the end.

    * Dungeons are tricky and full of puzzles that ramp up as get further into the game. I thought at times it got a bit too crowded with abilities with portals, time shifting, soul splitting etc making the dungeons convoluted, but challenging in a good way.

    * Boss battles. Nice to see boss battles and certainly there are a couple towards the end that are a pain in the arse to beat.

    * Lots of side missions and fetch quests to complete.

    * Loot. There are a lot of weapons and armour etc to buy of find from drops in the environment making for a lot of customisation. There maybe too many items to upgrade (2 weapons and 6 armour points) and too many stats on each item to make evaluating new items a fun process, but they are colour coded. Spending 20 mins trying to see if these boots with this shoulder item and this necklace makes me crit better is not fun.

    [strong]Cons[/strong]

    * At 30+ hours with only 6 of it being combat there is a lot of downtime for the puzzles (good) or just running/riding around large empty areas between dungeons (bad). Pointless filler most of the time. The fast travel option was a blessing.

    * While it played with the multi realm theme of Zelda it didn't so much with it. After leaving the Forge area there was little reason to hop back and forward.

    * There is a weapon upgrade option ?? Didn't see this until I was about 20 hours in and it seemed useless.

    * Earth Level - tries to turn the game into a third person shooter, but fails miserably. The camera and controls were not built for it and the rocket launcher gun was so OP that it made the level super easy without really getting injured.

Overall I enjoyed the game just as much as the first one. Technically it ran ok with a bit of slow down here and there and loading screens being a tad long, but overall it seemed like a nice graphical upgrade.

Another PSN freebie. About 5-6 hours in lenght depending on how much exploring you do.

It’s a Walking Sim with the emphasise on walking. You walk really slowly thourgh an English village where everone has disappeared apart from a ball of light that floats around. Follow the ball of light to catch glimpses of memories of the people who used to live there and uncover the mystery of the disapearances.

    Pros

*Graphically georgous village with great lighting effects and the lovely night skybox full of stars.

    * Dialogue is well done for most of the characters. You really get a sense of them even though you don’t really see them. Just glowy golden light figures.

    * Music done by a choir which, although not really my style, suited the game and was hauntingly good.

    * Story one - The one which was mainly about the resident of the village and their lives. Piecing out their past memories was interesting and made we want to explore more.

    Cons

    * Like most of these games. Little interaction. Which might be ok if the story is up to it. Unfortunatly only half of the story worked for me.

    * Walking speed. The map is quite large and you walk really really slow. I know there is a “run” button but it’s still not that fast

    * Getting lost and turned around is easy in the woods. There is no compass and even although you have about 40 maps in this very small village it was still sometimes hard to tell where to go.

    * If you wander away from the glowy ball to explore it’s never clear where or what to do next.

    * Story 2 - Don’t want to spoil it but it is BS of the highest order.

    * The autosave is too few and far between, it only saves after a motion controlled story event. My game crashed and I to replay a fair chunk.

Just over 12 hours to complete.

Resident Evil 1-4 are some of the best games around. 5-6 sucked.

Fortunatly this game harks back to the 1st and 4th games in the series and I loved it.

    Pros

    * Beautiful and horrific house visuals. House and levels are creepy as hell.

    * 1st person and sound design added to the creepyness.

    * Story was great. Pulled back on a lot of the convoluted storylines from previous games.

    * Great characters in the Family with some fantastic voice work.

    * Boss fights were different and vary in difficulty. Each are pretty clever in design and tactics.

    Cons

    * Resource management can be a drag.

    * You are given a choice towards the end that makes no real sense. I picked the obvious one so not sure how the other one goes.

    * The late character reveal is stupid but doesnt really affect the game.

Great reboot of a classic series.

Had this game for ages and never played it. Not entire sure that wasn’t the right idea after all.

I was pumped for this when it was first announced, the initial trailers were pretty decent.

Unfortunatly I don’t think the game lives up to the interesting premise. Ghost detective had potential to be fun. Use spooky powers to solve crimes, walk though walls and possess living people (and cats).

In practice though the game ends up being a fairly bland, not very challenging nine hours. There were intersting side stories to solve, however the main storyline is a very standard and predictable.

Portal without the humour, character or ingenuity.

70 puzzle rooms with little in the way of real challenge accompanied by a creepy AI voice.

    Luckily it was free.

    PS4 - 8hrs 40 playtime

It’s a fantastic remake of one of the best games ever. Looks fantastic, sounds amazing and there are some little improvments in the controls for a better experience.

There are still issues. The world although nice to look at is a bit too empty. The controls are still a slightly janky, making for frustrating a feck battles when you horse wont behave or the camera gets in the way etc. Especially the damn final boss, I fell off him too many times and climbing back up was a pain.

The boss battles are mostly fantastic, each a puzzle of sorts. How to get at the weak points, how to get through their armour or get them within reach to jump onto. It’s fun as hell.

    Love it.

Free on PSN after years of people asking for it.

The game is pretty bland. The idea of adjusting your size or using metal/ice for parts in the game could have been fun if it wasn’t totally scripted.

Free on PSN this month is this nice little puzzle platformer Rime. You are a young boy who washes up on a deserted island (for the most part) and must puzzle your your way through doors and find a way to the top of the tower.

    Pros

    * Sonically and visually georgous. The cell shaded landscapes and slow classical soudtrack are a pleasure. Lighting can really add to the magical atmosphere in early level and depress you later in the wet maze city

    * Puzzles are simple but fun. Shadow puzzles allow you to alter the day/night cycles, pressure plate puzzles where you have to manipulate boxes or a "robot" and energy puzzles that have to be done from certain places or timed.

    Cons

    * Easy to get lost and not sure what to do next and your fox guide has vanished.

    * I could see what they were going for, but I don't think they fully pulled it off.

Overall it was a fun 5-6 hours, but probably won't stand out.

There was a lot of pre-hype/controversy about this game pre-release. Mainly due to it being set around a cult in rural USA. Would it be a politcal story about living in rural america and a pointed swipe at current US politics and gun ownership.

I had hope for a few minutes that it would have something meaningful to say, but nah the story in this game isn’t what was hinted at in the early trailers. As such it’s probably the weak point of the game. I more or less tuned out the religious cult mumblings and enjoyed everything around it. I did however “like” the out of nowhere bonkers ending which was at least different.

You play a rookie from the sheriff’s department in Hope County Montana, a Rural made up part of Montana USA. The Cult run by Joseph Seed has more or less taken over the county and are kidnapping and brainwashing locals, developing a drug that causes hallucinations and compliance or experimenting on the local wildlife. Once your attempted arrest of Jospeh goes wrong and the other members of your team are captured you set out to rescue them.

Joseph has three siblings who each hold one of the hostages and have their own region which you need to liberate. You can do this in any order or jump between each region randomly. Story missions and side missions and activities all earn you resistance points which builds up to a boss fight in each area which in turn liberates that area when you defeat the boss. Liberate all three areas to trigger the final battle agains Jospeh.

While the story is a hoccum the gameplay is fantasticly fun. It’s not massively different from previous Far Cry games it’s still a great open world game with a lot of fun things to do and georgous scenery.

    Pro

    * The open world is great. No more climbing towers to unlock areas (they even joke about it near the start of the game. Missions and side missions are unlocked by talking to NPC’s, coming across them by exploring or finding things in the environment that pop things on your map. It’s more organic and gives more reason to go to parts of the map you might not have done before.

    * The combat the guns are just as good as before. Taking over bases is still a shit ton of fun.

    * Co-op can be activated for virtually the entire game and playing in this sandbox with a friend is enormusly entertaining (depending on the friend obviously).

    * Lack friends, you can recruit nine companions that each have different skills to complement your playstyle from air support to Cheeseburger the grizzly bear.

    * The Prepper stashes are hidden bunkers that contained a lot of money, weapons and upgrade points. Finding and getting into them were nice little puzzles. One might need you to find a sniper spot to shoot a lock through a window another might mean you have to drain water from the bunker etc. It was neat.

    Cons

    * Story is a bit Meh with a lot of religious metaphors and talks about a collapse and the end of the world.

    * They changed the crafting system to a more perk based system which was fine, but meant the hunting was less meaningful in this game as upgrades came from activities or finding perk magazines. Activity perks came more from doing stuff in the world or using specific weapons and seemed like just trying to stop you using the same gun for the whole game.

    * It overuses the capture and escape story. Every region has 3 notches on the resistance meter and everytime you hit one suddenly the bad guys that you have been mowing down captures you gives you alot of story exposition and then you somehow escape…9 times Pan

There is nothing particulrly new about the game. The villian isn’t as good as Voos or Pagin Min However. I put 40 hours into the game because I was having fun in the world and the gameplay mechanics. Ignore the story, play with a friend and just have a great time.
