GoatRoyale: Best of 2010

List items

  • My first playthru of Mass Effect 2 saw Shepard become full Paragon, have every single crew member loyal and SURVIVE the endgame, and had the Normandy explore a vast majority of the galaxy. My first playthru was done in 2 sittings over the course of about a day and a half. That's all that really needs to be said about my feelings for this game and this franchise.

  • I usually like Rockstar games, but never to the level that most people do. Red Dead, however, has me drinking the Kool Aid and naming it my top game of 2010...well, except for one OTHER game that receives slightly more adoration from this Sci-Fi nerd...

  • FUCKYEAHKIRBY!

  • Despite the fact that the hundreds of dollars I already had invested in DLC made purchasing a third Rock Band game a forgone conclusion, 2010's entry is without a doubt the most refined of all the games in the plastic instrument genre. Adding keyboard support is the last step you can take before getting into the realm of truly esoteric music peripherals and the refinement of the existing instruments makes this seem like it may, by nature, be the last proper entry into the franchise for quite some time. No matter, the steady stream of DLC content will keep me coming back for years to come.

  • The original No More Heroes was a game that, flawed as it was, proved to me that I owned a wii for purposes other than simply playing first party Nintendo games. Desperate Struggle is by no means a perfect game, but the combination of entertaining, over-the-top characters, satisfying sword/grapple gameplay, and just a dash of 8bit minigames makes the game one of my favorites of 2010.

  • Bungie's swan song for the Halo series is a game that, to me, finally realizes the franchise's full potential as both a solitary and co-operative experience. Along with an outstanding competitive multiplayer suite, Halo Reach more than earns its place on any Xbox 360 owner's shelf.

  • Probably the one game on this list that I DIDN'T finish this year, but you know what? I'm okay with that. I don't care if the late game includes you beating puppies with a sack full of loose change, I've played enough of DQ IX to confidently put it on this list (and at the number 8 spot, no less) based solely on the experience that I've had up until this point.

  • I can't say that I loved Bayonetta as much as everyone else apparently did, but then again I was NEVER into any of the Devil May Cry style character action games. The fact that the character of Bayonetta herself and the downright crazy world she inhabits got me to finish a game in a genre that I usually toss aside after only an hour or two of play is a serious accomplishment in my book and definitely earns Bayonetta a sexy, if hairy, number nine spot on this list.

  • I never read a Scott Pilgrim comic. I didn't particularly like the Scott Pilgrim movie. I did, however, play an unhealthy amount of the Scott Pilgrim game. Yes, I know it's River City Ransom, but it's River City Ransom on a console that doesn't look like ass when hooked up to a HDTV; that, and a kick-ass soundtrack by Anamanguchi, kinda puts the game on this list by default.
