Games I Played in 2021

List items

  • After playing through Fallout 1 last year, I fell in love with the world established in this franchise. I got burnt out trying to play through Fallout 2 so I put that on the back burner. New Vegas however, completely destroyed my sleep cycle during that time period. Amazing game overall, kept me busy during the pandemic times immersing me into the wasteland.

  • I was really looking forward to this game for a while and then it finally came out. I did not get around to playing it immediately on account of being hooked on Fallout: New Vegas. Once I did though, I was not disappointed at all. The emotion-based battle system made for fun gameplay and the story was absolutely dark and captivating.

  • Toilet in Wonderland - I played this on a whim when someone recommended it to me. I thought it was going to be some silly nonsense game and while that's exactly what it was, it was written pretty well for what it was.

  • This was a long time coming. I kept putting this game off, but I had been meaning to get into it sometime after I played through Chrono Trigger although I never got around to it. I am glad I did however, since I expected a Chrono Trigger clone, but got something that was more like a blend of Chrono Trigger and Phantasy Star with some unique elements. All in all, a pretty neat experience.

  • After playing through the first game last year, I just had to play the sequel eventually and oh man did it outdo the first game. Andoyne 1 can be described as A Link to the Past with a broom + Yume Nikki. Anodyne 2 is just its own beast with an interesting theme of finding meaning in mortality versus living in a state free of mortal limits, but without the pleasures of life.

  • Played this for a game guild in a server I am a part of and I am glad I did because Golden Sun is such a good RPG for the GBA. While having a pretty basic battle system, the amount of customization possible with the djinn system as well as solving puzzles with utility psynergy abilities added a depth that I was craving in a JRPG. The dungeons combined with the soundtrack by Motoi Sakuraba gave me fond memories of my time playing Tales of Symphonia as a kid.

  • I decided to begin playing this game alongside Golden Sun, but Golden Sun ended up taking up more of my time. I put this game on hold once I reached the mission with facing off Grit in a map with fog, total nightmare! I will eventually return to this one day though, it's really good.

  • I began to play this after playing through Golden Sun and it's a pretty neat little game. An action RPG combined with a SHMUP? Who would have ever thought it! Really fun concept and cool customization options with the different bullet types and combinations. Still need to finish this one as well.

  • This was the next game from previously mentioned game guild. Sadly, I did not get to play this all the way, but I do intend to return to it eventually. It was a pretty neat JRPG with cool music and an interesting battle system with the whole learning abilities from monsters aspect. The encounter rate is pretty insane though, but that is fine as it's nothing compared to Breath of Fire II's encounter rate which was abysmal.

  • After putting Breath of Fire III on hiatus, I decided to play LISA on a whim since this was a game I had on my mind to play for a long time. This is one of the best post-apocalyptic games I have played for sure. Poor Brad, nothing good happens for him or that world in general, no one can catch a break. Battle system is simple and fun, story is depressing and compelling, music is neat, all in all a good package. I have not played the DLC which follows up on the story yet though, but I do plan on doing that in the future.

  • I wanted to play a simple 3D platformer and Toree 3D is exactly that. You play as a cute little bird who is looking for his ice cream while going through different unique levels.

  • This was the next game guild game. Did you know that the scenario writer for this game is also the same as Majora's Mask? No wonder I loved playing through this game. It's a wonderful self-contained adventure with bizarre scenarios and fun dungeons to go through.

  • Started this game on a whim since it's also been on my mind for a while and I've also been a fan of the Epic Battle Fantasy series in general for years now. I have not played through this entire game yet, but I will eventually. The story is not really a serious one and might leave one to be desiring some substance, but the battle system is engaging and dynamic with all the various attacking choices as well as the ability to capture enemies.

  • I felt like playing another small game and this was it. It's a neat GBC styled detective adventure game with an interesting mystery to solve. In this game, you will encounter: murder, robots, and scheming rich people. If you have 2-3 hours free, I recommend this little gem.

  • I am a huge Tales fan and I am especially a huge fan of Tales of Symphonia which was my very first RPG experience. It is easily one of my favorite if not arguably my favorite game. That being said, Tales of Symphonia also happens to be a distant prequel to Tales of Phantasia, the first Tales game in the franchise. It's about time I got around to playing this game and I enjoyed it quite a lot. The gameplay still holds up despite the encounter rate, the story was surprisingly dark which I liked, and the characters were all fun to see interact.

  • I needed to short break after Tales of Phantasia so I decided to play another small game. Pikuniku took me by surprise with its themes against leaving ultra rich moguls unchecked in their shenanigans which made the already solid adventure that much more enjoyable.

  • I still need to get back to this game since I got distracted from playing it, but Wild Arms is such a solid JRPG experience on the PS1. The magic customization system is actually interesting to play around and experiment with. I also enjoy the post-apocalyptic wild west setting, we really need more wild west stuff in JRPGs.

  • I was in the mood for a Metroidvania so I decided to play this since it was not a very long game to go through. I did not expect the difficulty, but I was glad to have some challenge to make this more fun. Also this is the only game that I know of where you can cut through enemies with a simple maple leaf.

  • The weapons made of meat convinced me to get this game and try it out. It sure is an interesting game, but I do not quite understand how it works yet. I do hope to go back to it one day and get better at playing and understanding this meat trip.

  • Ginormo Sword - During a conversation where flash games were being talked about, Ginormo Sword came up and I decided to play it again. I was obsessed with this game as a kid, but I never got to finish it entirely. It's a pretty simple game that parodies classic RPG tropes and you can make your sword the size of the screen. Really grind heavy, but it's also addicting.

  • With the announcement of Metroid Dread, I decided to say screw it and actually play through the main Metroid series as I had never played a Metroid game before. I played through Zero Mission as my first Metroid game and I was absolutely hooked. This is an excellent remake of the first Metroid and an amazing starting point for newcomers.

  • AM2R specifically. I remember hearing about AM2R so I wanted to play it. I would have played Samus Returns, but I was not in a position to be able to get it at the time so this was the next best thing. Regardless, the Metroid II experience was still amazing and I loved seeing all the evolved Metroid variations.

  • Super Metroid is usually hailed as one of if not the best Metroid and also one of the best SNES games of all time. While not my favorite Metroid, it is up there with being one of the best SNES games. Perhaps the quality of life improvements in Zero Mission and AM2R spoiled me a bit, but I still greatly appreciate Super Metroid for setting up the foundation and it still holds up neatly till this day. Plus the soundtrack is full of bangers.

  • This is my favorite Metroid game mainly because of the narrative around it and the gameplay is also really good like all the other Metroid games I played before. The atmosphere in this game leaves you wondering just when the moment of peace and quiet is going to break and it's just amazing.

  • I was playing the Metroid games the week before Tales of Arise (my most anticipated game of 2021) came out and since I had enough time before that happened, I decided to play Ghost Trick. I was in a server where the game was the hot topic at the time and I was convinced to play it. This game is such an amazing experience. The puzzles are clever and the story it tells through these puzzle scenarios is so compelling that the twist just leaves your jaw on the ground. More people really need to play this game, it is way too underrated.

  • So I could not get into Undertale at all, I sucked at the battle system. That being said, I decided to try out Deltarune because why not and I actually enjoyed my time with it. I was able to get accustomed to this battle system and I had a nice time playing through this. Of course as I did not play through Undertale, I could not fully appreciate the lore tidbits, but it was still quite the enjoyable experience.

  • This is it, my most anticipated game of the year and.... I have yet to finish it.... Look, I was lacking the free time and I also got distracted by other things. From what I did play however, I greatly enjoyed my experience. This is such a huge leap from what Tales games usually are and I am so blown away by the sheer quality of this entry in the franchise. I really cannot wait to see where the Tales series goes from here.

  • I was bored and decided to play this on a whim, Pretty neat game overall with a cool magic system. I did not get to play a whole lot of this, but it's a nice game for sure. I will return to this one some time in the future as well.

  • I was looking forward to this game and the reviews basically convinced me to get it to play and I found this to be quite a pleasant experience. I'm halfway through this game and the world feels so alive and intriguing with how certain aspects of it function exactly. I really do want to find out more so I will definitely hop back onto this soon.

  • Metroid Dread finally came along so I had to take a break from Eastward so I could play through this seeing as how I played through the mainline Metroid titles. All in all, this game was really cool and it truly felt like the next step from Fusion. The EMMI I personally found intimidating enough and the main antagonist was pretty cool as well.

  • Another game guild game. I've never played a Genesis RPG before, but man have I been missing out. PSIV is such a cool game. The sci-fi setting at the edge of an apocalypse, the integration of magic and demonic entities in this setting, and the way the characters are written are all excellent (Rune is the best character btw). Battle system is for the most part a regular turn-based JRPG, but with a few more additions like combination attacks and macros which is basically like planning out your entire turn in one command. Easily one of the best JRPGs I have played.

  • Murloc RPG: Stranglehorn Fever - I'm not really a WoW type of guy, but I do recall playing this flash game when I was much younger and decided to play this through just because. This is a pretty enjoyable little game based on the WoW world and you play as a Murloc who goes from not knowing anything about combat to being the strongest warrior around by the end. It's a shame the sequel never got fully completed.

  • Yet another game guild game from the server. Sadly, I have not made much progress on this yet, but I do plan to catch up probably around this time. So far though, I did enjoy what I played. I was never really convinced or motivated to play a Suikoden game, but after trying it out for this game guild, I actually found it to be pretty enjoyable. I will definitely be playing through this soon as well.

  • This game seemed pretty interesting at a first glance and I thought it was going to be a card game with horror elements, but this turned out to be something much bigger. The gameplay in every act is fun and intriguing, it makes me hope for an actual card game of this. The lore is interesting as well with many meta elements incorporated and some mysteries to uncover. All in all an amazing game.

  • This is an early access game, but as a long time Crash Bandicoot fan I had to get this and try it out. It sure does feel like a classic PS1 era Crash platformer with wacky character and set design. The level design is much more difficult however and I did not expect that at all. It was a pretty fun experience, but I had to take a break from it on account of the difficulty. I can't wait to see how the final product turns out.

  • I got into a mood to play yet another Zelda game and I heard a lot of people like Minish Cap so I decided to try it out. While it was a bit cryptic at times, I did enjoy this title for the most part. It reminded me of when I was playing Link's Awakening so I think Minish Cap is great for being able to channel that overall feeling.

  • I started this game recently since I was in the mood for a Metroidvania again and I am loving it so far. The world, combat, and humor are all great and I definitely will enjoy playing through this to the end.
