I just caught a Crabawler in pokemon moon, which is a fighting crab with boxing gloves, and decided to nickname it Hilary Swank after the star of oscar winning boxing movie Million Dollar Baby. The game popped up a message saying You can't enter that word, and wouldn't let me use that nickname. I guess it's possible that its upset that swank is one letter away from skank? Or maybe someone at nintendo really hates Hilary Swank and snuck this into the game somewhere thinking noone would actually try and name their pokemon after the actress? Anyways, very bizarre.

EDIT: One of my Dark Souls 3 characters has the word "shoe" in the name. Or rather it has the word "s***" in the name. My name became more crass through censorship.

This reminds me of the list of names Football Manager would filter for its generated players. Serial killers, war criminals... and hilarious joke names. So, no Hugh Janus, Dick Licka or Wayne Kerr lighting up the league in 2030.

Trying to get around the Pokemon word filter is one of the most fun things about Pokemon.

I remember how Kingdom Hearts: Dream Drop Distance wouldn't let me name an olw-like monster Nightwatcher because of the word that's in the middle of it. I didn't even use any of of the sharing features of that game. Because of this I went out of my way to use numbers to name it something offensive instead.

This isn't a hard problem to solve, but it requires a bit of effort on the part of the filter. Most devs probably don't think it's worth it.
