Nidhogg is quickly becoming one of my favourite games to play with friends. The online doesn't work very well, and there's only four stages, one of which is awful to play on. On top of that the single player is pretty boring, with AI that is pretty predictable/simple.
But in my eyes, the local multiplayer of nidhogg is so enjoyable that it negates all of this. Getting a group together to play side by side is such a great experience that it easily justifies the 15 dollar price tag. Super easy to jump into, and enough depth to justify hours and hours of play. Each stage demands a different type of gameplay: from the crazy freedom and chaos of the Castle, to the heavy emphasis on 1-on-1 fencing skills in the Mines. It's like combining the mindgames of an in-depth fighter with super accessible controls and a simple goal: get to the other side. It allows people to experience the excitement of those types of cerebral mindgames without any barrier to entry.
Watching nidhogg is as exciting as playing it. I saw a review compare it to theater, and it's a pretty apt comparison. Constant shouts of surprise, laugher, shock, and excitement are common everytime we play.
Please don't pass this up. If you enjoy competitive, hilarious, exciting, tense, ridiculous, and whatever other adjective you like types of games, get this game. And buy it at full price, the developer deserves the money.
