    Overview

Lithtech is a game engine developed by Monolith Productions in conjunction with Microsoft. Monolith would spin off a separate company solely dedicated to supporting and extending the engine under the same name, though they'd later change their name to Touchdown Inc.

    History

    • Development of the engine began in 1997 as a joint venture between Monolith Productions (the developer) and Microsoft (the fianceer) under the name, "DirectEngine". The goal of DirectEngine was to showcase the capabilities of the then young DirectX API while other engines were targeting the OpenGL and 3Dfx APIs. .
    • On April 3rd, 1998 PC Gamer News reported Monolith and Microsoft having split, with Monolith paying Microsoft an undisclosed sum for the rights to the DirectEngine and to their original IP, "Riot: Mobile Armor". After assuming control of the engine, Monolith renames it "Lithtech Engine".
