Fantastic multiplayer bolsters an underwhelming campaign.
Halo 5: Guardians probably has the worst single player campaign of any Halo game to date. The story is a ludicrous fan fiction that has taken the series pretty far off the rails and into over the top, quasi-anime territory. The levels are all fairly linear shooting galleries with too little variety and few of the set piece moments that Halo games have been great at in the past. Luckily, the multiplayer mode is in the best place its been since Halo 3, with excellently tuned new game modes highlighting the best parts of Halo's gameplay. Free support in the way of map packs and other updates, including an expanded Forge mode, has been very welcome, and undercuts the sting of the vaguely pay-to-win card mechanics added to the game. As a fan of the single player campaigns in previous Halo games, Halo 5 is quite a big disappointment, but thankfully the multiplayer has been sped up, refined and improved upon in really exciting ways. Halo 5 is a great multiplayer game, but fans of Halo as a single player game are likely to be let down.
