After the cult success of their 8-bit Master System, Sega decided to give gamers a taste of their arcade capabilities with a 16-bit console. Known worldwide as the Mega Drive but called Genesis in the US, it provided graphics and sound a couple of steps below their popular System 16 arcade cabinets. The Mega Drive/Genesis turned out to be Sega's most successful console.

Toys R' Us lists Sega Genesis w/ 80 games for $24.99

Yeah I saw this in the catalog.

If it's semi-legit I may pick one up.

Of course it is  legit , it is on the toys 'r' us website. It says built in games so I guess it is like those plug in and play things.

I wonder if this means that in a few generations we will be able to plug in a thing and play 80 PS3 games for a similar price.

Yup, looks like it's a plug in and play thing. I'm curious of the quality of the emulation...

I wonder what games they included other than the obvious Sonic games. I don't know a thing about the Genesis but a good chunk of those 80 games have to be great, right?

The box claims it's compatible with actual Genesis carts. That's pretty fuckin' cool for a plug n' play device.

Edit: Shit, two controllers too? Provided this thing comes with the Streets of Rage and Golden Axe games installed, that's like hours of built-in co-op fun.

You'd have to get a shitload of storage space to make that happen. You could probably fit 16384 Sonic 3s into a single Metal Gear Solid 4. (Maybe. I'm assuming that MGS4 is 16 GB, Sonic 3 is 1 MB, and that Google isn't lying to me. But my point's been made.)

@Video_Game_King: Just wait until a GB feels like a MB. It'll happen within our lifetime.

Edit: Also MGS4 is closer to 25GB

If this has an HDMI port I'm in. I already have a Genesis, but needing to dig out adapters to play it is a drag.

Well it's one of Jeff's favorite consoles. I remember a bombcast where he argued that it was the best console ever, against Brad's opinion that the SNES was the best console ever. That argument lasted like 30 seconds, and Brad won, but still.

I work at a retail store and we had some of these in last week. We sold out of them pretty quick. The one we were selling had 90 games in it though. Ten extra games were bundled onto a cartridge.

I find it insane that Sonic 3 is not one of the games included while Sonic 1,2, and Knuckles are. They even have 3D blast! What a ridiculous omission.

The thing that says "As Seen on TV" tells me it's better to leave it on the shelf.
