as far as I know it's because of problems we had with spam bots.

@Kennard: It's essentially a safeguard against spammers and spambots, and now that's been resolved I'm locking this. If you're creating a thread on the forums try and make sure it's more than just a few words of text, and try to write something that is meaningful and will incite discussion. Threads like this violate our rules and in the interests of the forums are just going to be shut down.
