Should mythological/folkloric characters that appear in different video games have their separate entry per game?

I've noticed that mythological/folkloric and historical characters that appear in different games and have different artwork and abilities/traits still get one character profile.

Like for example, Achilles, the Trojan War hero appears in 12 video games but has one character profile. Yet in most of these games although the character is based on the same mythological person, he is differently designed character.

Shouldn't he have different profiles then, one per each game?

A better idea is to give each game their own little space on the character page. You'll have all versions gathered and neatly stacked together then.

Thing is that this is useful for people who are going "I wonder how many games Zeus has shown up in" and similar inquiries. They're all the same character, just different versions of that character.

I think it's kinda silly that real people who also played themselves as a character in a game get two separate wiki pages. I seem to be the only one who thinks like that and there is logic is to why it's like that, but Ozzy Osbourne and Kurt Cobain having 2 separate wiki pages is kinda silly to me. I didn't mean to derail this, but I always thought that having one bio with spaces on their wiki page detailing what games they've been (or played characters of themselves as) in would be a better use of space.

@shivermetimbers:

Ok for real people who lived in modern times separate entries are not needed but for mythical characters maybe it is needed.

Take Ares for example, we have separate profile entries for the Marvel and DC versions of Ares, so why not have separate entries for God of War Ares, SMITE Ares, Shin Megami Tensei Ares etc etc.

They are all essentially Ares but have different designs, different traits and a different story that connects them to each franchise.

I am positive that they deserve to be seen as different characters like the DC and Marvel ones and have their own entries.

@kodial: I like your Ares example. Yes, they are all based on the same original mythological character, but they are different characters within the different games. Ares from DC is a DC unique character. If you tried to put that character into God of War, it'd be copyright infringement. If, however, you make your own version of Ares, it is a new character and thus should have a different page. They have the same inspiration as an origin, but they are different from one another.

I guess I just need the green light to attempt to break down (in time of course) characters entries like that, into separate ones.

I feel like only super significant versions should have different pages.

I feel the same.

I think that for example, SMITE characters, being really unique gameplay and design wise characters despite being based on the same mythological figures, deserve their own entries.

Or mythological characters generally that have some importance, some impact in the game in which they appear. Like for example, Zeus in Titan Quest isn't a big deal as he only delivers a speech in the end of the game and he doesn't actually appear anywhere. But Zeus in God of War is a very important character with a very unique story line - I think he deserves his own entry.

I just want the green light from a senior member to attempt to create different profiles for each of them.

I've been waiting quite some time to get some sort of official approval or dismissal for my request to break down character entries of mythological characters. Except I missed it, there's been neither approval nor dismissal. Should I take it as lack of interest?

I am interested though. I truly believe that characters from different games based on the same mythological person are essentially different characters (different stories, different designs, different traits and abilities) and therefore should get their own wiki entries.

I shall attempt to start this with Abaddon.

I will break down his profile to Castlevania Abaddon, Megami Tensei and spin-offs Abaddon, Hellgate Abaddon, Diablo Abaddon, Darksiders Abaddon, Primal Abaddon, Guild Wars Abaddon, Warrior Kings Abaddon.

The existing character entry will be reserved for the Megami Tensei Abaddon. I will create new ones for the rest - images and links to games that are not about the Megami Tensei Abaddon will be deleted and added to the new Abaddon entries. The short description will be changed to note that it is about this specific Abaddon.

I would have also liked to add an entry for the Solium Infernum Abaddon but I can't find a picture of his avatar. I don't like creating character entries without a picture of the character. If anyone can find it pls post a link here or something.

The Binding of Isaac Abaddon is just an item, there is a character that can be added as Apollyon though. The Clicker Heroes Abaddon can be added but I think the more important characters from this game should be added first, Abaddon is like the only character linked to this game. The Ottomedius Gorgeous/Salamander 2 Abaddon can be skipped because it's a spaceship, not actually a character.

Every new entry will have a short description on the deck, links to the games the character appears and at least one picture.

That's all I am planning to do and I will do similar things with every other character entry that hosts a bunch of different characters based on the same mythological person.

I'll be waiting a little with this post to be told a yes or no from a moderator. If I don't get a reply, I'm gonna do it anyway.

@hamst3r:

But I guess they monitor forum activity too, don't they?

Furthermore in the forum everyone else can see it and if I get the OK, everyone else interested can also contribute.

In general, no.

In your Abaddon example, that would basically create a mess for anyone trying to search for any particular Abaddon. For example, someone types "Abaddon" in the search and there's like a dozen pages with no way to discern but for a tiny thumbnail. Some of this may change with the upcoming redesign, but currently it's not a good idea.

Thanks for the reply.

What if the name for the character entry is like 'Abaddon (Castlevania)', for example? Wouldn't that make it easier to find the exact character one would need?

Or how about at least I expand the description section of the same character entry, maybe to add a short description for each different character that is based on the same mythological person?

Like for example in description section I say Megami Tensei Abaddon is this and he did that in the game, place a nice little picture next to that description of Abaddon as he appears in Megami Tensei -- then another paragraph saying that Abaddon in Castlevania is this guy and he did that, another nice little picture next to him and so on and so forth until I covered them all or well, most of them at least.

This is what we generally do most of the time. Using parenthesis in page titles is something we try to avoid.

Very good, thanks! I can work with that.

Given enough time, I will attempt to make a section for each different character that is based on the same mythological person, in the description slot of their profile.
