How to use offset filter correctly?

Hi, I'm trying to use the offset filter in order to ignore the initial X number of results, but I'm not sure how to use this filter correctly.

I've tried adding &offset=20 to my search query but it makes no difference to the returned results.

Any help would be much appreciated.
