The big Wheel of Wheelhouses rolls around again only to stop on another familiar genre around these parts, albeit one that is certainly less represented than others: the sexy cyberpunk thriller visual novel. I've only covered two others previously - VA-11 Hall-A: Cyberpunk Bartender Action ( IGotW #6 ) and Synergia ( IGotW #215 ) - but ever since Snatcher (or possibly Neuromancer for C64) there...

The concept of an "indie" game is pretty simple. It's a game that is self-published by a developer that is not part of another large corporation and so doesn't have big corporate funding behind it. It can also be expanded to include small scale "indie" publishers with limited staffs and budgets that don't really fund games but instead provide some basic help with distribution and marketing in e...

Previous entry: Scurvy Scallywags I don't know if I should start by talking about the current state of this website. I feel like it's both inevitable and also not the place to do so. I'll keep writing, because I think written content is undervalued these days. Someone has to keep every piece of video game chronicling from splintering into yet another undetectable Discord, right? I think that su...

In the wake of, uh, this entire week so far, I'm not surprised this topic hasn't come up in the forums yet. However, I did want to put something out there, because I happen to be enjoying this game despite its flaws. For reference, I'm playing the PC (technically in beta) version using a mouse and keyboard. Here's a bulleted list of some of my thoughts: Positive The gameplay loop is authentical...

Hi, I don’t have much to say about the *current state of things* on this website, at least beyond what others have already said. I’m going to miss Jeff Gerstmann’s presence on Giant Bomb, but I'm excited to see what this new team can cobble together (Dan and/or Bakalar, my DMs are open if you'd like to listen to my pitch for turning Dubious Wheels/Towers/etc into a GB Feature.) I’ll leave it at...

Howdy all, it’s been a while since I blogged on GB and after watching @zombiepie , @mento , @arbitrarywater , and @jeffrud keep up their prolific outputs for so many years, I just had to get back in the game. I’m not sure how frequently I’ll be able to put out a full blog. My life has changed a great deal from the years I was putting out a blog a week. However, the last two days of radical chan...

Well, well, well... It feels like my heart has been down a well and back up again. I'm now enjoying it's rickety ascent into the sunshine (not Mario) in a little wicker bucket. Now, you may say, rightly, wicker is a bad choice for a well bucket but... its my brain and thats how it works. It's this well ride which has promoted me to type this blog. I guess I'm typing this for myself to articulat...

For someone who has been on Giant Bomb since the very beginning, I can say that the past few days have been a quickly shaken cocktail of emotions. Jeff Gerstmann no longer being a fixture of Giant Bomb is a blow I entertained every blue moon in the back of my head but never fully considered. I know the exact time and place of where I was when the news of Jeff's GameSpot firing first broke. It w...

835 hours… After all that time, I feel that finally my patience coming to an end, I guess I have to thank Elden Ring to help break the spell… not that the spell itself was running smooth, oh no, it was not, the cracks were all over the place. However, a couple of days ago I did one last push in the part which I was stuck… I managed to get past it, but only because there was a way to skip the qu...

Introduction To me Giant Bomb feels like a small site. I mostly see the same people in livestream chat and posting on the forums. Yet intellectually I know that GiantBomb.com must get a fair amount of traffic and have a sizable number of users in order to pay the salaries of the crew, artists, and engineers that run the site. So I've always wondered: How many users does Giant Bomb have? How man...

When Jeff Gerstmann was fired from GameSpot, a Blog Post by Rich Gallup recalled a time when Jeff, frazzled from working hard during GameSpot's customarily intense E3 coverage, had accidentally misstated his own name as "Jeff GameSpot." It was in reality a simple slip of the tongue for "Jeff Gerstmann from GameSpot," but as Rich pointed out at the time, it was also symbolic of just how inexorab...

Whatever you expected E3 to look like in 2022, you probably didn't bet it would be suspended in its current limbo. The ESA says that this year's E3 is a no-op due to COVID restrictions but that the expo will return with all bells and whistles next year. Some gamers regard the association's "Brb" response as PR fluff or wishful thinking, and it's possible that after so many false prophecies, thi...

I feel like I should enshrine somewhere the handful of traits I get excited by when perusing my Steam library of all the curious Indies I've picked up. I'm not sure how many times I've opened an entry of this feature by talking about adventure games that figured out whole new ways to tell a story, or how my nostalgic love of 2D explormer s and dungeon-crawlers continues to be reflected by small...

Preamble I will warn everyone right now, I am not Austin Walker and don't think this is the best Star Wars game ever made. For those of you that have been following my blogs, you know that for the past three years, I have been penning a yearly series titled "I'm A Star Wars Nerd and..." about updates related to the Star Wars IP in the video game industry. If you have not read those blogs, here...

Quick Note: This was originally written as a single, very long blog, but for the sake of my readers' time, I split it into two. Where do I even begin with this one? The astronomical expectations before it released? Or how it was such a disastrous release that it led to unprecedented numbers of returns, and even Sony delisting the game from sale on PSN for months? Given that I think it's safe to...

For May 2022's "May Madness" feature I'm just playing a bunch of Sega Mega Drive / Genesis RPGs that caught my eye after researching for the Mega Archive blog series. You can see how well I'm doing by visiting the first entry, here . Another odd pick for today, but such is the result of my weird areas of interest. Madou Monogatari I is a first-person dungeon-crawler from erstwhile shoot 'em up...
