The Foamstars Open Beta Was A Good Time There's no denying that this game has STYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYLE! Recently, from September 29th until October 1st, Foamstars hosted an open beta. The event allowed people to get through the game's tutorial, review its cast of characters and their unique abilities, and have a trial run with its slew of multiplayer match types and modes. When the beta closed, Squa...

Back in July, I took a look at some of the games on my work-in-progress GOTY list , and it seemed that I would miss the chance to write about them. Staring down both a loaded October and a swollen backlog of games released this calendar year, it seemed like a good time to make a sequel. It's possible a couple of the games end up being honorable mentions, especially the last one on the list. So...

SCHLOCKTOBER ’23: This month I am playing some games with horror elements and blogging about them to determine whether they’re nasty tricks or delectable treats. I decided to start my 2023 Schlocktober horror marathon by finishing Pumpkin Jack a game I started last year in an aborted attempt to have a horror game filled October 2022. This means that I only really played the last 30 minutes of t...

Reviewing Fate/Samurai Remnant on Steam Deck (About 36 hours to see the full credits for the first time according to the save file. 1 hour into the New Game Plus as the time of writing. Played in Japanese text.) Yours truly almost gave up on playing this one after a failed attempt to start a wiki page for it on this very site. Then on the day this game came out, a rather earnest fellow publishe...

An explanation of what I'm doing here can be found in my introduction post . Last week, I alienated my readership by speaking THE TRUTH . Last time we were on topic, we looked back on the PS1 games released in the first half of 1996. Last time we were with the Saturn, we looked at the March '96 releases of Winning Post, Revolution X, D, Criticom, Battle Arena Toshinden Remix, Magic Carpet, Nigh...

Hey SeGuys and SeGals to another edition of the Mega Archive : the only place on the internet that still remembers the Sega Genesis/Mega Drive . Actually, that's not even remotely true, but if I keep on this obsequious path maybe Sega will send over some review copies of the half-dozen Like a Dragon games they're developing to your hardworking boy. Fingers crossed, yes? Regardless, we have anot...

Note: The following article contains major spoilers for Atomic Heart, The Catcher in the Rye, Fight Club, and Goodfellas. If you want to criticise Atomic Heart, there's no shortage of unprotected flanks for you to stab at. There's an open world that is hemmed in and devoid of side tasks, there's its history of bugs so severe that you wonder how it ever launched in its initial state, and there's...

Shark!Shark! is out for modern platforms. It seems unremarkable. This game is what we all thought it was going to be. It looks like a low to moderate effort update to a somewhat obscure retro game without many attempts to modernize it or add content for longevity. It would have done okay on Xbox Live in 2006 but it's probably going to barely be a blip at a $15 price point in 2023. It definitely...

It's your weekly serving of Indie Games, and for this occasion we have yet another emotional puzzle-platformer. Whee. I only just covered Evergate a little while back but these particular types of games sprout like weeds. Well, perhaps that's too ungenerous an analogy; there's a reason I keep playing these things, after all, and the way they tend to weave storytelling with apposite game mechani...

I've been looking for something to help me through the hot 'n' humid summer months and what better way to beat the heat than to stay indoors watching questionable anime and playing questionable games based on said anime? For a rundown of this little project, check out the first episode . The Property Dirty Pair is a sci-fi action series about a duo of female "trouble consultant" agents of the f...

The Tower of Dubious Horror Games 2023 READER BEWARE, I'M IN FOR DESPAIR Welcome back to the realm of Dubious Horror. I’ll be honest: I have a shortlist for The Wheel of Dubious RPGs III: The Absolute Dregs with more than 40 games, as well as a smaller list of dubious character action stuff I'd really like to show off. Both of these will likely come to fruition next year, but I think it’s time...

What's this, you ask? "A game released this year on Indie Game of the Week? Will wonders never cease?" Well, jerk , sometimes I find my way to a Steam sale and pick up a few games that have captured my attention, and that was such a case for the third Glass Masquerade game from our friends at Onyx Lute . Though these games are essentially jigsaw puzzles with a veneer of class owing to their use...

When I was a kid gaming was a lot more compartmentalized than it is today. You had your Nintendo games, your Sega games, and your PC games and while there were a fair number of games that did come to multiple platforms there was generally one lead platform that the game "belonged" on. You could play Sim City on your Super Nintendo but everyone knew it was really a PC franchise. This mostly held...

Reviewing RESIDENT EVIL 4 (2023) SEPARATE WAYS expansion (6 hours to beat according to “kill screen” on Steam Deck) When Resident Evil 4 remake came out in March, 2023, it was rather refreshing to see an expensive looking polygonal extravaganza sold at the “low, low” price of 60 us dollars. I decided to play Wild Arms after finishing Final Fantasy XVI. I enjoyed that game but it had strayed so far from the series’ traditional RPG roots that it hadn’t satisfied my appetite for a JRPG . I’d bought Wild Arms on PS3 when Sony had a massive sale on digital PS1 games and that entitled me to a free PS4/5 upgrade so I figured that since Wild Arms had always been a series I was curious abo...
