As I write this, I've submitted my votes for Giant Bomb's E3 Banner contest, and am preparing my body (to use the official vernacular) for EA's press briefing in a scant few hours. E3's always a weird time for me, because I'm always ambivalent about the event itself - as a, let's diplomatically say "frugal", consumer of video games, it'll probably be at least a year before I'll try anything I s...

I don't generally go for cute games. I mean, I don't take steps to avoid them either if they look like they have potential either. All the same, Hidden Folks might be one of the cutest games I've played so far for this feature. Taking the Where's Waldo/Wally (delete as appropriate for your region) books as a template, Hidden Folks creates these enormous, highly-detailed and densely-populated di...

While many people know Dontnod today because of the widely-loved Life is Strange, few recall the company’s first game, Remember Me. Releasing almost 5 years ago to the day, June 3rd of 2013, Remember Me was an admittedly flawed action game that received mostly average reviews due to the flat characters and predictable story and was promptly forgotten by the overall gaming consciousness. However...

The movie is so bad that I reduced its cover to the smallest size possible. *This Appleseed movie is one of four that I will be doing for the month. For a small primer on the comic series, check out my Appleseed Month announcement here * The movie ends with Deunan Knute setting down flowers for her fallen co-worker from the police force. She takes in and contemplates her colleague's last words...

Like many of us, I've been a big fan of what Giant Bomb East have been doing lately. I've always felt an exceptional video feature for this site usually contains some extra edge or idea beyond than everyone sitting around commentating while one person plays a new game, which is of course the essence of a video game website but is already adequately covered by Giant Bomb's "meat and potatoes" fr...

After all those enervating CRPGs this month, I needed something loud, stupid, and fun to cleanse the ol' palette. In other words, Super Time Force Ultra is exactly the tonic I needed: a run-and-gun action game that broadcasts its dumbness loud and clear with its silly, broad humor while secretly packing a lot of cleverly subtle (or subtly clever?) mechanics under its hood. The framing story, su...

Did someone say vacation? Why, thank you. Entertainment Westworld: Season 2, Episode 6 - The longer this season goes on the less I care for it. I still contend that the plots are moving more outward than forward and that is why I don't care for it. Atomic Blonde - As much as I like this movie I feel that it falls short. The visuals, music and fight scenes are top notch but the story just doesn'...

As someone whose bedroom walls are adorned with Back to the Future and Jurassic Park posters, with Stranger Things figures dotted on my shelves and an unopened special edition of The Goonies propped up on the desk next to a PlayStation VR, the mostly 80s-driven nerdgasm that is Ready Player One sounds like it should be utterly captivating. The trailers have promised just as many pop culture ref...

If the new big screen incarnation of Lara Croft was intended as an extended advert to tempt you into playing the recently rebooted games on which the film based, then it can be considered mission accomplished. But based on how seriously Tomb Raider appears to take itself, one assumes director Roar Uthaug was keen to craft something that could stand on its own as an experience worthy of breaking...

Sorry to end this year's May Maturity on a bummer, but I had to bounce from Anvil of Dawn also. The developers of this game really could've benefited from a better sense of conciseness. After the promising initial dungeon of Gryphon's Keep, which had a few clever if somewhat incongruous traps for a keep that was theoretically built to house guards, and a sizeable first floor that broke off into...

The SNES Classic had a sterling assortment of games from Nintendo's 16-bit star console, but it's hardly all that system has to offer a modern audience. In each installment of this fortnightly feature, I judge two games for their suitability for a Classic successor based on four criteria, with the ultimate goal of assembling another collection of 25 SNES games that not only shine as brightly as...

PEW! PEW!... PEW PEW PEW! Dear anyone who happens to read this, After spending the last few months reintegrating GiantBomb.com back into my life, I am happy to announce that I will be having an Appleseed Month in June. That is, I will be reviewing four animated movies from the Japanese manga series in the following order: June 4 - Appleseed OVA (1988) (*update* it's done! Come check it out here...

Prior to a few months ago, I'd never heard of Anvil of Dawn , the fifth (and almost certainly final) game of this year's May Maturity feature. If you told me its name I'd have figured it was one of those noxious balms you mix together to appease a hangover in the morning. Anvil of Dawn is instead a 1995 RPG developed by DreamForge Intertainment - a developer we encountered last year with Menzob...

Note: The following article contains major spoilers for SUPERHOT. When I started playing SUPERHOT, the last thing I expected was that I'd get sucked into the story, but that's what happened. The game features play which you want to return to again and again, and as it turns out, that's not just for the sake of entertainment. This piece of media needs to be compelling because its story is about...

The release of Dark Souls Remastered this week has me thinking about that series again, as well as its many imitators. It's one of those franchises where its appeal is difficult to communicate to the uninitiated; after all, the game industry has been slowly moving beyond the idea of harsh fail states or the repetition of content you've already seen before you can make further progress. Even gra...

Some people on the internet have been raising complaints with the story in God of War, notably around the choice for Faye to have passed away before the game begins. I don't want to pick apart people's interpretations of story elements, because I see where they're coming from. but this particular choice was really effective for me personally for a few reasons. For starters, let me make the obli...

Well, I gave it a shot. If you didn't see it earlier today, I posted an Indie Game of the Week that covered Kathy Rain ; a sterling example of what the adventure game genre can be in this modern era where they no longer feel compelled to throw enormous budgets and intolerable mini-games at the player to justify a high price point. For as many details as I like about The Feeble Files - the voice...

After playing both The Feeble Files (a big-budget adventure game from 1997) and Kathy Rain (an Indie adventure game released in 2016) this week, I came upon an epiphany. An epiphany that might explain why adventure gaming "died" in the late-90s and early 00s and only came back to the extent that it has when the Indie development scene rose to prominence. The epiphany is thus: at a certain point...

Only the dead have seen the end of war. - George Santayana or Plato It's a holiday weekend, enjoy appropriately and responsibly. Disappointing to say the least after I enjoyed the previous episode. Arrested Development: Season 4 - Finished it and...

Dig Dug 19 April 1982 (Arcade, JP) Taizo Hori , aka Dig Douglas, is the canonical father of Mr. Driller . Give the choice between Mr. Driller’s adventures and his father’s first outing, I’m team Driller every day of the week. I’ve never quite gotten the flow of Dig Dug down to a point where I can get much past the first four or so levels. The game nevertheless represents the boldest stylistic s...

Welcome back to Hyrule, all, for this special one-off bonus episode of A Randomized Link to the Past . The site that creates randomizer seeds has a plethora of different conditions and configurations: the one with Garflink was Normal difficulty with no assurance that we'd get the sword and shield from Uncle Deadmeat, which is what I'd recommend to newcomers (the Easy difficulty makes the game's...

With the successful completion of Ultima Underworld II yesterday, May Maturity thunders on with its fourth game of the season: Adventure Soft 's The Feeble Files . Adventure Soft was one of the last, great UK-based adventure game developers, having made their mark on the genre - and the gaming industry - with their sardonic Simon the Sorcerer series. Building on the humor and storybuilding of t...
