Sam Esmail's tense cyber thriller Mr. Robot is back on our screens for its final season this autumn, and what better way to celebrate by playing the official game of the show? In a subtle nod to the hacking drama's prescience of a near-future world in the grip of a corporate dystopia, Mr. Robot The Game had the foresight of being released in 2007: a good eight years before the show itself aired...

Expectations are a hell of a thing. As I sit here, the day after finishing Outer Wilds, trying to wrap my head around the game, and my thoughts, I just keep going back to one thing: How did everything I've read and heard about the game in the months between its initial release (only on PC and Xbox One) and my actually playing it impact my time with it? Did it really have that big of an impact,...

I’ve been playing video games for a long time and I’m pretty comfortable playing games from almost any era. While modern games tend to be my favorites (I think Breath of the Wild and God of War 2018 are my two favorite games of all time, in that order) I have no problem going back to older stuff. In the last couple years I’ve played through the entire God of War series, took a detour to play th...

The side scrolling levels look...okay but nothing special, especially for a late 8th generation game. Artistically the game isn't even as good looking as Colors on the Wii. Sonic Forces doesn’t just feel like a bad game, it feels like a game that never had a chance to be good. It’s a disjointed mess in every way, from the nonsensical choppy plot to the short, simple, levels with no sense of pla...

Yooka-Laylee was pitched as a spiritual successor to the N64 Banjo-Kazooie games , the first of which is widely considered one of the greatest games of all time and almost indisputably one of the best games on the N64, a system that was pitched more at children than the rival Playstation and thus has a lot more nostalgia attached to it even though it sold many fewer units. Colorful graphics? Ch...

We're used to staring long and hard at serious issues in the games industry. Issues like workplace harassment, far-right political rhetoric on forums, and bullying in the community. However, a major video game publisher supporting an authoritarian government is a new one. Discussion spaces are alight with fury over the recent conduct of Activision-Blizzard, and I have a lot of thoughts on those...

There is an atmosphere to Control. Not literally. It has a mood that soaks out of almost every pore, a mood that at once kept me with a feeling of unease, yet made it hard for me to stop playing, or thinking about Control. Control is a game about a space, and a space that feels as alien as it does pedestrian. Stark concrete that shifts and moves, plain walls that go up farther than the eye can...

The puzzle-platformer, though a rare genre before the '00s, has become something like the default Indie game over the years. I've no idea if there's copious amounts of tutorials for GameMaker and Unity out there for budding developers that begin and end with a 2D screen full of platforms and switches, or if everyone decided they wanted to make the next Braid , but it feels like I see more of th...

"I came to this place to build the impossible. You came to rob what you could never build. A Hun, gaping at the gates of Rome. Even the air you breathe is sponged from my account. Well, breathe deep ... so later you might remember the taste.” Often I think that exploring the mysteries of a piece of fiction, be it a video game, a film, or novel, is only an excellent experience the first time thr...

Hi. Do you like the music from DOOM? Me too! Do you like surf rock? No? Oh. Well, I do...so I have mashed them together. I've had a long-standing interest in surf music, and whenever I've listened to the DOOM soundtrack, it's always sounded surf-y to me, with the twelve-bar blues progression and clean MIDI guitar sound. Surfing on the Shores of Hell Thy Boards Consumed (E1M8 - Sign of Evil) Dow...

It's an even-numbered week, and so the mighty pendulum of IGotW has swung back towards adventures and away from platformers: the only two types of game I play. Oknytt is a classic point-and-click adventure game with a darker, nocturnal look that belies the wholesome (if still a bit scary) fairytale story at its core. At six years old, Oknytt's one of the older games on my shortlist, but it's on...

I'm the kind of girl who likes Pokémon spin-offs more than the main games. Don't get me wrong, the generations I've played have been some of my all-time favorite experiences: I put 350 hours into Pokémon Diamond, working towards finishing the National Dex (I was 18 off in the end, thanks to an inability to get anything from Johto) and constantly re-battling the Elite 4 for fun. I'm really looki...

Finally, we're back to temperate weather and games regularly coming out again. All hail the end of summer's tyranny for another year. Of course, that just means everyone's now busier than ever. It's at this point where I start to think about what the year's been like in terms of game releases, as we edge ever closer to GOTY season. 2017 set a prohibitively high bar for the next few years to fol...

Note: The following article contains major spoilers for Titanfall 2. Titanfall 2 is the best shooter I've played in years. Respawn Entertainment's military sci-fi binds together threads of silky movement, and intense, ever-changing combat to create a fabric of uninterrupted flow. A rich buffet of player actions means that wherever you are on the map, whichever items you have at your disposal, t...

Welcome to this blog about Kingdom Hearts with me, King Dumbfarts (why'd I let my cousin proofread this?). My goal here is to see how much sense 2019's Kingdom Hearts III makes if you're coming to it directly from Kingdom Hearts (released 2002) and Kingdom Hearts II (2005). That means no side-games, no bonus "2.8" chapter added to later remasters to help bridge the lore, and an approximate four...

Since collectathons are de rigueur here on Giant Bomb dot com, I figured I myself might indulge in the time-honored practice of scouring giant platforming levels for hundreds of tchotchkes via Prospect Games 's 2016 Indie 3D platformer Unbox: Newbie's Adventure . A British studio clearly inspired by the likes of Rare (another hometown hero) and their N64 output, Prospect filled Unbox with the c...

Hey, I was bored Saturday so I wrote something on Facebook about MTGA and it got pretty long. Here it is! --------------------------------------------------------------------- I hope you're enjoying your Saturday! I wanted to say hello and say that I am really enjoying Magic: The Gathering: Arena. It is by no means a perfect game but it is a really fun rendition of Magic for the digital age and...

Welcome to the Bucketlog! It's going to be 2019's year-long blog series, focusing on games I've been meaning to play since forever. I've put together a list derived from a mix of systems, genres, and vintages because it's starting to look like 2019 might be the first "lean" year for games in a spell (though time will tell whether that pans out to be true) and I figured this would be a fine oppo...

Every single time I have sat down to play Double Dragon Neon I am almost always a little drunk. I don't mean that as a way to detract from what the game does well. I mean it in that I am almost always drawn to the game in a specific mood. I was inspired to go back and take a second look at this game after finishing WayForward Technologies 's new game, River City Girls, and because, well, I was...
