It's odd that it's taken me this long to acknowledge the hard work of Indie developers that have tried their own spin on a 16-bit/32-bit JRPG throwback. The Indie scene can sometimes feel like a zombie movie with the amount of antiques emerging from the grave stronger than ever, but this direction's been serving them well in getting some much needed attention from a general audience perhaps apa...

Gungrave is a video game I’ve always wanted to play; not because I heard it was a must-play game but because the Gungrave anime is one of my all-time favorites. It’s been years since I’ve watched the Gungrave anime, so I figured it would be fun to play the games before jumping back into the show. Published by Sega , developed by Red Entertainment , and created by Yashuhiro Nightow , the creator...

When it comes to game releases every year has its big headliners and hidden gems, but none were more packed than 2017. Astro’s Playroom is a unique type of game I thought we’d never see again. No, not a 3D platformer, which are experiencing a mini-resurgence over the last few years, but rather a console pack in provided free at launch. It is also a heck of a good game and topped the personal game of the year lists of both Jeff Gerstmann and Brad Shoemaker, two duders who, rumor has it, have played a fair number...

One of the secret best games from the year. I hope to find more 'secrets' like it buried in my backlog. Friends, like many of you I was bowled over by 2017's bounty of video game offerings. It was a veritable cornucopia of video game delights that year, including many franchise peaks: The Legend of Zelda , Super Mario , Ys , NieR , Tales , Divinity , Yakuza , Assassin's Creed , Danganronpa , St...

I wouldn't call myself a 3D platformer fanatic, but as an older gamer it's a genre I've enjoyed for 25 years, and it's a type of game that I can actually relax with, since most of them are pretty chill. Balan Wonderworld is a project I've been excited about ever since it was revealed, since it's a 3D platformer from a major publisher with marquee talent behind it, and I was immediately drawn in...
