Intense and linear WWII shooter.
Call of Duty 2 was an Xbox360 launch game and back then it was amazing. Almost 4 years later it really starts to show some age, but it also shows just how much shooters have evolved in these few years. CoD2 is still very intense and very linear World War II shooter.
WHAT A FAMILIAR STORY
Story is not so interesting. You play as 3 different soldiers: a Russian in Stalingrad, a British in Africa and an American in Europe after the invasion of Normandy. Authentic news clips bring a certain atmosphere, but other than that it’s just a linear mission after another until a bland and boring end. All you need to know is that it’s WWII and you need to kill lots of Nazis.
LINEAR AND INTENSE GAMEPLAY
Gameplay is very simple: all you need to do is push forward and shoot all Nazis. There’s no chance of getting lost, but there are infinite number of enemies so you absolutely NEED to push forward all the time. Death comes often, but luckily there are plentiful checkpoints so things don’t get frustrating. There is some feel that you are fighting a bigger war, but most of the time you need to do all the work despite lots of AI friends on your side. In short it feels too much like a shooting gallery.
GRAPHICS HAVE AGED
Graphics are still quite sharp, but it’s also clear that CoD2 is now an old game. There are not that many details anywhere, but the draw distance is good and the frame rate stays solid almost all the time. Structures don’t fall apart unless they are meant to do so.
AN INTENSE AUDIO
Call of Duty series is known for its audio and CoD2 is no exception: soldiers scream, bullets fly, grenades go off and all in all it’s a very intense experience. Music resembles war movies and voice acting is solid, but gets old before you reach the end of the game.
MULTIPLAYER
Multiplayer is for up to 8 players in game modes Deathmatch, Team Deathmatch, Search & Destroy, Capture the Flag and Headquarters. There is a primitive leveling up system, but mostly you need to use character classes. Unfortunately no one plays CoD2 online anymore, so I didn’t have the chance to test it.
TRIP TO THE PAST
Call of Duty 2 was a great game back in 2005 and while playing it you can already see where those great gameplay elements came to Call of Duty 4 in 2007. CoD2 also shows just how much shooters have evolved since its release so consider it a trip to the past.
