    Welcome to the Unsanctioned Unofficial Game Pass Game Club Year 3! Our 8th game of 2024 is Battletoads 2020. The target completion date is April 22, 2024.

    We ask that until that date you use the forum software to mark any spoilers, either story based or mechanical, in the discussion below. Ideally the bulk of the discussion will occur after April 22, but if you want to comment before then you are welcome to so long as the spoilers are marked. We ask that if you leave a comment before that date you also come back to the thread after it to read other people’s comments and respond to them, though of course we cannot force you to do so.

    All are welcome to participate regardless of whether you have stated a preference to or not and there is absolutely no commitment. You do not have to finish the game to participate but please let us know if you have not.

    You are also free to come back any time after the completion date and share your thoughts! This club is meant to be open to all whenever you want to join in the fun!

    So, ummm, I did actually install this and start it but I was not in the right headspace and barely got through a couple levels. It has a rancid reputation among some fans and I think I know why. I personally like the art a lot and I had no issue with the music but the toads' personality is not great. More importantly...oof on the brawling. It took me awhile to figure out why it felt so bad, and I think a large part of it is that your enemies' stagger window SUCKS. They don't so much break your combos as they just shrug them off and then proceed to juggle you. This was released before Streets of Rage 4 and Shredder's Revenge so you can argue it was prior to the beat 'em up revolution, but those games learned lessons from games of the past. Battle Toads' prior games were pretty standard in their beat 'em up elements and this game tries to reinvent the wheel in a really bad way.

    Then I got to the Turbo Tunnel and...it's much easier this time but it's SO long and boring.

    I think I get what the devs were going for and I will probably go back when I'm feeling more patient just to see if they find a groove further on, but this game really shows the perils of trying to modernize something classic. You run the risk of losing touch with the things that made it classic in the first place.
