Conviction was mysteriously absent from this year's Ubidays event back in May, leading some armchair industry pundits to wonder if the game was entirely kaput. Not so, according to videogaming247, who spoke to Ubisoft community development manager Chris Easton. He had this to say.
Splinter Cell Conviction is certainly not canned, despite what the Internet rumour mill says, and won’t look significantly different to what you’ve seen before. The gameplay’s evolved a lot but the visual direction is simply much better than what you’ve seen. The gameplay has evolved from what we showed at Ubidays last year and when you see it again it’ll be worth the wait.
Company rep endorses company's game! News at 11! Good to hear things are still progressing, though, and more importantly some kind of confirmation that Conviction will play differently from the last Splinter Cell...and the one before that...and the one before that. Ubi's obviously keeping itself busy with plenty of other stuff lately, what with a thriving annual Naruto franchise, and Assassin's Creed selling eleventy billion copies and all. So if anything, I'm glad they're putting some extra time into this series to come up with something that I can get behind once again.
What do you want to see out of the next Splinter Cell? With Metal Gear Solid 4 going the third-person shooter route (and rendering its stealth elements largely inconsequential to your success), do you think a traditional stealth action game can still play in today's market?
