@ultimaxe: It's just that if you are doing this on a monthly / yearly basis, you know exactly what tools you need, which components are compatible, you don't have to look in the manual and you don't wonder which stand off pins you need for the motherboard. So at that point, putting it together in 30 minutes is feasible.

But when people do this every 4-10 years, you don't have that confidence / routine and will have to familiarize yourself with how the tech has changed ( ' oh you can't boot the pc straight from the motherboard anymore?') or how particular cases work (' this thing doesn't have a drivebay'? ' where are the standoffs, are they supposed to be this small ? Did i fuck up? ' )

I think if they asked Brad to dismantle the PC and build it back within an hour, he would be able to do that now.

@onemanarmyy As someone who builds a new PC about once every 5 years, I would say preparation is the key. While waiting for parts to arrive, I download the motherboard manual and installation instructions for the parts and study them. My last build was 30 mins tops.

@themadman007: @paulunga: 20 to 30 min building any pc and you have zero cable management and a much higher risk of being clumsy and bending some pins or otherwise damaging hardware. I know you guys could probably easily do it but being experienced with hardware myself I would never purposefully rush myself like that (not that i think it'd be possible to do anything but a simple build in 20min). 4hrs may be on the long side but I thonk they were being careful with it as it's their studio pc. I also don't like to stress myself out unnecessarily (and frankly I kinda enjoy building pcs).

@yellownumber5: I think you should replace everything except for the 970. I upgraded everything to a 7270 machine and an i7. The difference was almost night and day and my system wasn't as old as yours. You will always have the option to replace the 970 down the line if you feel like you need more power or you if want to run triple As at 4k.

Building PCs sure has changed since 9 years ago when brad only took 3 minutes. Must be because of the GPU and cooler.

man... I don't understand how it takes them 4 hours to put a couple components into a case. Building PC's are a 20-30 min job at most. No one should ever think this is how you put a PC together. It was an entertaining stream though.

I always think that too but I always forget the CPU cooler takes up most of the time, depending on the mount it can be really frustrating, especially if don't have good lighting.

I jumped into the stream at some indeterminate point while at work, so I could not watch closely. I got the impression it was a Intel/Nvidia build, but really never saw or heard anything specific. Anyone have a parts list of what they put together, or a timestamp where they run down the list of parts?

Applying thermal paste isn't a huge deal unless you put on way too much or way too little. I find the best way is to do the the small pea or dot like Brad had originally put on and then apply the heat-sync directly on top without manually spreading it with your hand. The pressure from tightening the heat-sync will spread the paste evenly in a circle over the cpu. That way you get full coverage of paste and no air bubbles.

@monkeyking1969: I don't think they list many of the components explictly, but they already had a GTX1080 in this machine and said they're keeping it, and from the looks of those boxes they're putting in an i5 7600K.

@lebdrift: It's good practice to bench test your components outside of the case before you get everything inside. I used to build them directly into the case, but it's a massive pain if you have to disassemble the whole build to RMA. Also occassionally the capacitance or a bad ground in the case can cause your whole PC not to work for seemingly no reason, so you need to know what's working before it all goes in.

@ripelivejam: Bending pins? Is that seriously something that ever happened to you? I probably installed somewhere around 15 CPUs over the years and that never happened to me. Also, you're right. I don't care about cable management at all, I basically stuff all the cables in the case at the end. XD Hey, never had any problems with airflow, so I guess it worked out.

I've been putting off installing my new pc upgrades...I have 2 1 tb ssd and a 6 tb wd black hard drive, 16 more gb of ram all sitting in a drawer but have been not wanting to open my computer and clear my old hard drives to make room. I just wish I had more sata ports since I have 6 hard drives and if I put the 3 new ones in I gotta clear 3 to 4 tb from other media to move onto the new drives.

This problem is exasperated more by the fact that xcom 2 war of the chosen and divinity 2 caused me to clear about 100 gb on one of my ssd only to realize I'm out of hard drive space again.

Anyone know a solution for more sata ports besides a new Motherboard? I really don't want to throw my old 3 2 tb hard drives away.

@steveurkel: You can get a PCIe SATA controller card and sock that in your motherboard for more SATA hookups, they're not particularly expensive or difficult. It'll play hell with your cable management though.

Mounting cumbersome CPU coolers is much easier outside of the case. Also much easier to do a dry run to see if it even posts before you've mounted everything and ran cables through the case.

All modern PC cases have easily accessible back sides, though. So it is super easy to mount even complicated coolers onto.

Just rebuilt my computer after the PSU crapped out and took the motherboard with it.

Ryzen 5 1600

GTX 1060

16gb RAM

650w PSU.

It's not crazy strong, but since I play at 1080p, this computer will serve me well for at least a few years.

Also, why did I think that Destiny was a third person shooter?

Computer parts... assemble!

There are no video notes about their parts at this time. The case they are using seems to be Fractal Design's Define S with a Windowed Side Panel. No optical drive bays means a lot of room for a custom loop radiator or more fans. Good case; I have the Define S without a window and it keeps my computer really quiet.

¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Mining cryptocoins is an arms race that rewards early adopters. You might have heard of Bitcoin, the first decentralized cryptocurrency that was released in early 2009. Similar digital currencies have crept into the worldwide market since then, including a spin-off of Bitcoin called Bitcoin Cash.

Today, there is very much a digital gold rush where people can make a small profit by investing a few hundred dollars in equipment, and then spend months mining for digital coins before any return on their investment sets in.

Litecoins, Dogecoins, and Feathercoins are three Scrypt-based cryptocurrencies that are the best cost-benefit for beginners. At the current value of Litecoins, a person might earn anywhere from 50 cents to 10 dollars per day using consumer level mining hardware. Dogecoins and Feathercoins will yield slightly less profit with the same mining hardware but are becoming more popular daily.

Mounting cumbersome CPU coolers is much easier outside of the case. Also much easier to do a dry run to see if it even posts before you've mounted everything and ran cables through the case.

I usually put the mobo in first too, but those are all fair points (I can think of a time or two where it would have been so much easier to put the CPU cooler on if it had been outside of the case).

I've always built mine outside of the case, Then when everything is in, apply the CPU cooler after everything else has been done including cable management.

@yellownumber5:

The first question: can your PSU handle a 1080 as your system is currently configured. Use a wattage calculator to figure that out. Another concern is how much trust you have in your PSU. Is it considered a good make? Does it have a lengthy warranty. You don't want to install a $600 card only to have the PSU blow up on you and take out your shiny new card. You also need to know if your PSU has the right connectors to power whatever 1080 you get. Opinions differ about how much headroom you need on between your system draw and your max psu capability.

Here's a wattage calculator

http://www.coolermaster.com/power-supply-calculator/

The second question: should you upgrade the 970 and what should you upgrade it to, given your situation?

There's a tech channel I like on Youtube called Tech Deals and he contemplated upgrading from the 970. He recommends upgrading to a 1070, which is 80% faster according to his tests. Your mileage may vary. But you might not need to go all the way to a 1080 to get a nice boost.

https://youtu.be/i8rmi1jkJEY?t=2m23s

Third question: is a 1080 going to far outstrip the capabilities of your other components other than PSU. I've seen many videos that say that CPUs of your generation are still good for most games but are showing their age in others. It really depends on what you play. Strategy games tend to need the beefiest CPUs.

My gut tells me that you'd probably be okay with a 1070 and that a 1080 might be overkill, especially given the other aging components of your system. A 1070 probably won't draw much more power than your 970. It really depends on the games you play and the resolution you're gaming at. Anything less than a 1070 doesn't seem worth doing.

For a broader range of opinion and access to real experts, you may want to post on reddit at buildapc. You'll need to tell them exactly what components your computer has and its os (I think they have a template you can use), what games you intend to play, and what resolution you intend to game at. They'd be able to settle the three questions I've talked about better than I can. Good luck.

@yellownumber5: You should also think about how capable your monitor is at displaying higher frame rates. If you are using a modest display maybe a video card upgrade might not improve things all that much. I don't know much about this I just know it's a factor. Another question for r/buildapc.

If you search within r/buildapc "should I upgrade to a 1070 or 1080" you find a lot of good responses. Here's a good one that addresses the video card and monitor questions.

@lebdrift: haven’t seen the whole video so I’m. It sure what Brad was doing but I have done it both ways. As a PC tech, I tend to hook as much of it up as I can outside the case so that 1. I have more room to work with. 2. I do this for testing purposes. Nothing is worse than getting the whole thing screwed together just to find out some random unknown component is defective. This doesn’t happen too often, even when you do it as often as I have. But once is enough to make you cautious.

I do know that Brad had to install the aftermarket heat sink, which requires changing out the mounting hardware on the back of the motherboard.

@reasonableman: thanks I've looked into those but I've asked this question at two or three local computer part stores and they always tell me there is no solution ... I asked about the pci expansion slots and they said they don't exist lol...I will have to order but how reliable are They? I just don't like having to worry about one of my drives becoming un use able but the reason I'm upgrading is my oldest hard drive is from 2002 so yeah.

Right now I'm about another year or two before having to upgrade my i7 3770k and my old motherboard is still pretty solid. I have a 6 gb 980 ti though so eventually I'm gonna get 1080 ti but it's not needed quite yet.
