I’ll be in Japan when this game releases. I’ll have my switch with me and I think it’d be a lifesaver on the long plane trip back. I know that switch games are region free but I’m unsure if I’d have an unlocalized version or worse one lacking in any english language option at all. I know the game still isnt out but does anyone have any insight into this?

It'll be in Japanese. Can't imagine it'll have an English option. Though it's not like there's a deep and rich narrative that you'll be missing if you really just want to play it.

Yeah I'd suggest eShop because I'd guess there most likely will be an English option

Answering my own question here: japanese copy is the same as US despite the box it comes in. Language is determined at the system level.
