Great episode, I hope you do a "part 3" on Kids Youtube and all the frankly disturbing and fetish-y bootleg animations on there. I think those are the most insidious of these types of content farms.

I guess I'm the weirdo who just stops watching when they get weird and never shares any of these videos.

It's kind of annoying how much internet content is troll-bait intentionally made to be dunked on. I'd like to think I'm good at spotting it (especially when it comes to political-type stuff), but even I've fallen for that shit.

Yessss, I love amateur DIWhy when done in earnest- but the ultra-manufactured side of all of these trends is so deeply off-putting.

Having done some youtube-holing lately, are you guys open to suggestions on sub-genres for future content? I've been deeply sucked in by the 'Tribal people try' genre of videos. Reactistan in particular - as they've recently started a 'Tribal people play' series of introducing people from remote tribal regions of Pakistan to various games.

The Scientology Channel footage probably doesn't cost them shit because they use slave labor to make it all.

the biggest problem with these videos is that the broader audience doesnt truly get the joke

because they take it at face value, they aint in on the joke

for WEEKS afterwards, even after Dan showed up in NYC for a spell, people were taking the kayfabe at face value.

So many people think like that and automatically shift into "easily forgotten no downside outrage mode" with alarming ease if not seeking it out. Beats learning of real tragedies, I guess!

That ending was tops

The main problems with all these DIY videos are:

1. They say that you only have to use household stuff to make it - suddenly without notion they use a 3D printer, a welding aparatus, or something heavily industrial or custom made

2. The actual time to do this stuff is AT LEAST 30+ minutes.

3. The sustainability of said DIY stuff is not mentioned or tested at all.

Thinking again on it, the discussion of osmosis & diffusion that is the actual science behind “bigger than before” would make for part of a Bak to School episode (can also swing back on the effects of salt water on the body) except for the part where Jeff has such a strong reaction “but why does it have to be blue!” The answer to that is just to make it visually different than the last stage. (edit: also by making the water blue, it shows the diffusion of said blue water into the bigger egg)

Its also amusing to thing how Jeff on these two shows, he’s on opposite sides of the instructing vs learning equation.

New series is unbelievably good.

At 35:50 you were speaking to the idea of kids getting into this stuff and missing the point that these videos are not factual. You said something to the extent of "They have not built their cynicism."

A few weeks ago (on the food crimes video, I believe), you used the term "Internet Literacy." That phrase is such a perfect term for what you're describing. It IS that sort of cynical ability to discern fact and fiction in online content, but it also calls back to something else that's similarly been important recently - media literacy.

I just wanted to encourage you to continue to adopt that term - "Internet Literacy" - in place of "cynicism". "Cynicism" has that tinge of negative connotation, where as "Internet Literacy" implies less disapproval and is actually an important concept people should be aware of. Maybe I'm being nitpicky, or perhaps the semantic differentiation will make all the difference for someone listening. :shrug:

Also, I think what you guys are speaking to is SUPER important and the humor around it is a perfect way to make these stories/investigations digestible. Thanks and hope this series continues!

This show is really great. One of my favorites in maybe Giant Bomb's history. Entertaining, humorous, but also informative without driving me TOO insane (although man that egg shit at the end of this episode pushed me RIGHT up to the brink). Just great stuff all around and all 4 involved (including the EXCEPTIONAL editing work by Voidburger here) are just fantastic. Hope this sticks around for a while!

I have a 2 year old daughter and I am utterly terrified of the shit she is going to get hooked on later in life. I hope this feature is still going by then so I can be at least a little informed on it.
