My personal frame of reference for any story involving ZiffDavis will always be that I was an *obsessive* viewer of ZDTV and then, when it rebranded, TechTV. And then TechTV died and/or was consumed by G4. I was not yet regularly visiting (or even aware of, for that matter) the "big video game sites" on the Internet in those days but it's wild in hindsight to connect the dots between tales of Gamespot's history and the ZDNet stuff to my own TV viewing experiences and watching these shows and this network I loved go through branding changes that I didn't understand at the time.

I broke my wrist last month and needed a metal plate inserting into my arm to help it heal. I was struggling to type as on a normal keyboard you are always twisting your wrist ever so slightly. I picked up a Kinesis Freestyle 2 and wish I'd done it years ago.

FYI @jeff

Speedtest.com and most other speed test websites aren't capable of testing speeds above 750MBPS and have warnings saying if you are on Gigabit that you'll see 750 and may actually be higher. I'm sure there is some way to actually test Gigabit but I'm not personally aware.

EDIT: Copy/Pasted from the Google speedtest, you have to go 3 steps into "Learn More" to see this:
Note: Currently, the test can measure connection speeds up to 700 Mbps. If you have a connection speed over 700 Mbps, your results could be lower than your actual connection.

Decided to watch a random UPF video today, and funny enough this is a video where Jeff mentions that asshole who made the team put their collectibles in different spots.

UPF 1/18/13 around the 1 hour 11 mark.

@rorie for the chiptunes stuff, the gameboy is modified. It's using the sound hardware of the device, but it's generally the same as a a lot of the DJ tools used by a lot of artist! https://www.instructables.com/id/The-Ultimate-Guide-to-Creating-Chiptunes-on-the-Ga/

@jeff

Most folks using a gameboy at live shows are using Little Sound DJ (LSDJ) or Nanoloop. Both of which have free roms to download and run ok in emulators. LSDJ has the full version and Nanoloop is a demo with no saving.

Nanoloop is pretty intuitive and has gotten away from being a hard GB sequencer. The mobile app works surprisingly well.

LSDJ, on the other hand, is more barebones and obtuse but has more control over the sound chip. Operates similarly to Famitracker. You see a lot more interesting stuff coming out of LSDJ plus you can MIDI 2 GBs together for more than 4 channels.

Great stories and I'm weirdly fascinated by the economy of authoring guides even if it's sad to hear it's probably been replaced by unpaid wiki contributions nowadays (how ironic?). Much like Jeff I prefer text I can search for and skim through rather than videos.

I can only imagine how a KOTOR guide must have required weeks of playtime to explore every possible choice and consequence.

Some people don't play games they just watch walkthroughs which are like plays with only one actor. Game guides are like D&D manuals. I wonder how many people just read the game guides and never even played the game. They just read about the manual and that was their fun. real weirdos. :P

The list is a work in progress. Media seems to have parallels amongst its different forms

I can't remember what the first mp3 I got was but it was probably Metallica or The Prodigy. I do however know exactly what the first mp3s were that I ripped myself and they were Lake of Tears - Devil's Diner and Dimmu Borgir - Mourning Palace that I ripped from a sampler CD that came with a magazine that a friend bought. It was before you could read audio CD digitally so you played it in the computer while recording the audio output to a huge WAV-file with the Windows "Audio Recorder" program and then you used Fraunhofer's reference encoder which took almost an hour per song to encode. Those two songs were definitely worth the effort tho.

Matt's comments about Star Trek Deep Space Nine are largely fair. The Dominion War is certainly the high point of the show and that only starts a few seasons in. Although there are some fantastic episodes and character development in the early seasons. But if you're looking for the usual Star Trek "story of the week" type content then DS9 isn't that.

However Winn and Dukat are up there with the best of Star Trek villains or even characters in general. Their relationship is deliciously evil.

Sorry to disappoint gentlemen, to properly calculate AQI you need 24, and 8 hour averages, so updating every 2 hours is just fine (i.e. frequent enough). Equation for AQI is available on Wikipedia, I implemented it in C a few weeks ago when I was making my DIY AQI sensor with an ATMEGA32 and a breadboard.

Yeah, I don't personally see the appeal of tenkeyless keyboards either. I use the hell out of my numpad. I need it.

I don't think the WoW guild that doesn't look up strats beforehand is that crazy or "precious." The people in that guild know what's up, and anyone joining the guild would be specifically looking for that. If they want to do it that way, fine. It'd be ridiculous if they, say, join a pug group and then demand no one else looking anything up. But they're not doing that.

I don't remember this Shadowlands requiring an SSD news story. I know I'm listening to this a month late, but it now says you can use an HDD. But, with the caveat that it may affect performance. The thought that a game (especially WoW of all things) would require an SSD is pretty ridiculous. I only got my first SSD a couple of years ago, and I still use regular HDDs for most things. Pretty old HDDs at that. Although I do have WoW installed on my SSD, seeing as I play it a lot and faster load times are nice for it.
