Jan taking a stab at certain "Quick Look," forum threads at the beginning? lol no matter I got a laugh out of it thinking so.

I would like to explain my less-than-stellar performance and blame it entirely on lag and Jan's lack of lane support. Certainly not because I didn't realize I was way underleveled.

Played a game, got 10 kills and won, and I think I'll retire on top as the very best. Just like my first game of Modern Warfare 2 where I was at the top of the leaderboard and never played online CoD again. It's a good system!

I want a Switch so bad but being poor sucks.

I know it is recycled internet content, but I would absolutely watch a video where we just show Bakalar pictures of Pokemon with no context, and he guesses their name.

@chrisdev: I'm not a huge Pokemon fan but I would watch the hell out of that. That's a great idea.

This site needs a segment where Jan shows Jeff different Pokémon and Jeff has to guess the name.

They asked who the game is for. People i worked with, that are young aduls, told me they were really into the game. Some played all night when it came out. So there is definitely an audience for it.

I'm having a good time with this. Best thing? I get to say "I main Slowbro" with a straight face.

I'm pretty sure the Switch has had the dark theme since day one.

This seems okay-ish. Although it's so incredibly basic that you have to be quite deep into the pokemon love to walk away from a better Moba. Like Heroes of the storm had slightly more going on, yet not enough to stay alive. I will say that Pokemon is clearly a bigger brand though. It seems adequate enough + it's still a pokemon game so i figure this will be quite a profitable game.

I will say that it's quite hard to get a sense of the state of the game during the match it seems like. Especially with scores that goes into the hundreds and only gets revealed at the end of the game. And the abilities look so underwhelming compared to something like Dota.

I also don't understand why you have league-style grass patches, but only like 2 of them next to eachother. What's the point of it? If you want to give people the opportunity to juke, let them zig zag around trees and fuck up sight lines! That has always made more sense to me than League's grassy patches. Especially when you then straight up don't provide enough of it to make it functional.

Finally you have the P2W aspects, and that just sounds like it comes down to asian players generally wanting to have a gameplay advantage if they buy something, while western gamers tend to see P2W as a negative, even if they pay. It gives me flashbacks to playing korean F2p games before the market at large got into f2p. Maybe these attitudes have shifted over the last 10 years since i read an article about that.

But then again, i wonder how severe the gameplay boosts are in this game. Like i saw Jan hover over something that gave him a 1% health increase. That's mostly meaningless if you know what you're doing. Unlike something like Gunz the duel where you could straight up get more & better medpacks if you were willing to pay.

@leviathan_dive: If you're ok with not playing on a TV and losing a few features, a second-hand Switch Lite can go for pretty cheap right now. There's a short list of games you won't be able to play due to the Lite not having the same hardware features as the full Switch, but none of the "big" Switch exclusives are part of it.

@jeffbakalar I was a senior in high school when Pokémon hit the US. I got super into it, and the launch coinciding with my first job helped. I worked in a toy department, so I got first dibs on all the stuff. I have so much vintage Pokémon merch, which sounds weird until you remember that, yes, this was over 20 years ago.

Honestly, because I've known so many folks around my age that enjoy Pokémon, I tend to forget its a children's property. Then I think about who primarily filled the theaters to see the movies and showed up at Toys R Us to play cards and go "Oh, right. Huh."

The version number is likely made out of a changelist number from their version control - every time someone makes a change to content or code, they submit that to a version control system and the number goes up by one. It's to keep track of what goes into any given build at a glance, both on the client and on the server, probably.

@onemanarmyy: For me personally, I'm playing this because I genuinely like MOBA game mechanics and team synergies but I want to avoid all the toxic ultra competitive baggage that other MOBAs have.

This is pretty new so it has a chance to get real bad later on if angry tryhards start to become the norm but there's no way it can devolve to sewage level chat logs of a established MOBAs.

@merxworx01: That makes a lot of sense. It's so satisfying when you're gelling with a team and you all jump onto someone at the same time and combo your skills together nicely.

That said, personally i would have a real bad time playing a MOBA that has no communication options at all. I'm not one to write entire paragraphs to teammates, but i do like to draw arrows on the map or ask to team up to push a lane together.

@onemanarmyy: sure the communication are very simple and limited to canned responses but honestly I don't mind it that much. Once I get an idea on what a pokemons abilities are I'll try to support the rest of the team in a way that makes sense. The communications don't feel great so my coms will be limited to when I'm away from the fighting until I get used to the controls and I've always been one to monitor the minimap so i can tell if my team is pulling back, making a push or engaging with opponents.

Currently im just trying to find which digital monster I want to start out as then go from there.

Okay, genuinely baffled-- how the HELL do you see who's winning? I'm not a MOBA guy. Is this a stupidly obvious question?

@el_blarfo: No, and it isn't helped that Pokemon Unite has elected to obscure the team scores to further lower vectors for bad manners.

It's fuzzy math, but the less goal points a team has on the mini map, the more the opposing team is scoring. Each goal on those lanes have 80-100+ points of health, and dunking on them contributes to team's victory score. Those goals are fast travel points, healing circles, and maintain a path of movement buff for the allied team and a debuff against the opposing team.

I don't know which Pokémon Unite the people complaining about pay-to-win are playing, but it sure ain't the one Ive been playing. It's all cosmetics, account xp / currency boosters and unlocking Pokémon licenses earlier. Nothing that directly affects thr matches.

The 'r' in the version number stands for 'revision'; it's the way that 'revision control systems' like Git or Subversion keep track of individual commits to a project and keep the overall project files in sync between multiple developers.

@wastingnight: Thanks, that's not a bad idea. But with the Switch I would mostly like to play on the tv though.

@toxicantidote: You can upgrade your held items, this gives them stronger passive bonuses, they go all the way up to level 30, you can spend gems on that.

I put £20 in for the fun I've been having which was doubled for the first spend bonus, it was only enough to put my 3 items I've been using to level 22

It doesn't sound like you played this game at all. The comparisons to LoL are based on stat boosts that affect in game character stats in both games.

Ok, yeah, this game's super fun. The short games go a long way.

And my last relationship ended because of League, as that sort of took over her life during Covid. Good times!

@shadow961: Even I have eliminated a whole team multiple times, just like he did in that video. And I've not spent any money. The stat boosts aren't as high as it looks like in that video.

@leviathan_dive: If you're looking for a full Switch, I think you might be able to get a good deal on them once the Switch OLED comes out.

Even now you'll probably find a bargain on second-hand units.

@wastingnight: True I wouldn't mind getting an old model for a good deal. I would ususally be playing on tv with a pre controller. Thats another expense though. Someday I will get one lol.
