Unreal Championship is a really odd one for me. I have always been a huge Unreal Tournament fan and UT2004 is one of my favorite shooters ever. So at some point after UC2 came out I purchased a copy when I didn't even own an Xbox. However a friend of mine did, but the only time I could play it on his Xbox was at his house, cause his family used it as a DVD and media player. So I really didn't get to play it much at all. No idea how much I paid for it, but thinking back now it was crazy.

Definitely a delight hearing Jeff talk about it.

Too bad about the Sonic Origins DLC debacle making a mess of that because it obscures the fact that those versions are going to be based on the Christian Whitehead/Headcannon remasterings so they should be quality if not the definitive versions of those games.

Jeff is correct with regard to Sonic; the games were terrible. Once you're stopped from zipping around on loops and springs and are forced into the game's platforming it completely falls apart, the characters control like ass, terrible movement, terrible jumping, terrible games.

While Jeff G might have been joking, I do believe there is something to Nintendo delaying the Mario movie because of how well Sonic 2 did. I believe they realized at that point they had to take making the movie seriously and couldn't half-ass it. I also believe they wanted time enough away from the Sonic 2 film so people's minds won't be so fresh when the Mario movie came out. People won't be so quick to make comparisons on the quality between the two films. And yes, if the Mario film comes out and it sucks, when both Sonic and Sonic 2 films are seen as some of the best examples of video game adaptions you can watch, it will indeed be a huge blow to Nintendo, even if it's just their egos and nothing else.

Speaking of Sonic, I both agree and disagree with Jeff G. I agree with him about how changing Sonic's character design sucked. But my issue is not the Sonic 3 change, but the later one where they made him taller with green eyes, and they changed his personality to being a douche-bag, but he's the hero so we should root for him. They also changed Knuckles personality over the years for the worse. However, I completely disagree with the classic games being bad. There is a reason that to this day Sonic has a huge fan base, so huge that two well done movies were made about him. There is a reason that classic games keep selling in different ways, and now Sega is trying to pull a BS Rock Star move with the DLC. Those games are still loved and played and shared. This will never change. Like Mario, Sonic games are here to stay and like Mario, more of them will be made. And for the record, Sonic CD is one of the best games ever made.

I love you all, but can you please be more disciplined about not yelling into the microphone and blowing out the volume level? Brad was bad about it when he would yell "no" when he was getting wailed on in any dark souls game. Ben just did it, well quite frequently. It just takes a minute off my life, as I scramble to turn down the audio and consider if I want to listen to the rest of it or not. I listen to relax, not to have to ride the audio levels for two hours straight.

I know Jeff probably saw it live during the AEW show but I tagged him a screenshot of the Mr. Do slot machine during the show because I had never heard of it. So that made me proud.

@jeff_gerstmann and @jerf are wrong about when animated films get finished. I worked at a famously now defunct animation studio in CT (look it up, fuck Disney) and there was script work getting done on films up to 6 months before release and the actual film was getting sent out for finishing 3-4 weeks before release. So 100% they could be reworking a huge chunk of the film if they just gave everyone another year to work on it.

This was a great Bombcast. I think this crew has settled in, and I hope they animate the Kirby talk at the beginning.

"Old Sonic games are bad actually" has become the ultimate gaming "OK, Boomer" take. I get that they got reassessed as bad by old gamers in the aughts, but y'all threw out the baby with the bathwater because you didn't like the current ones, and never recognized the mistake.It says everything you need that the bombers who disagree are the youngest members.

The Battle Network games were some of my absolute favorites of that time; played each of them for hundreds of hours. But like Jeff, I mainly liked the story and overall premise of them. The combat was fun too, but it was never the draw for me. Playing a game that has that combat (even making it more complex) but being completely divorced from the Battle Network universe is just... not appealing to me whatsoever.

YES, I 100% thought the Amoeba song was saying Tony Hawk in THPS 3. And then when I heard the same song when it was on the radio in GTA V, I was like how the hell did I ever think that?

Jeff is right. The only good Sonic games happen to be spin off games like Mean Bean Machine.

Sonic games sell you on the idea of going fast but the level design keeps throwing enemies and obstacles in front of you that completely sap your momentum so functionally you are just playing a regular platformer with a guy who has a weird acceleration to the way he moves. any extended go fast segment is just a warp pipe with a cool animation. Mario feels like he is moving faster for all practical purposes 90 percent of the time.

I agree with Big Jeffery G on Sonic. It's always been trash. That said, Jess telling Jeff he's a "sick freak" is everything to me. I lost it there.

@janman Right there with you on Pokemon Go, down to the whole "being stuck in the mid level 30s" thing. I've been playing since launch but after the first year it became SUPER sporadic because it felt like Niantic just wanted me there to spend money and then they'd somehow find a way to make me feel bad for not playing as often as they wanted. Overall it does suck that such an amazing idea for a Pokemon game that would've seemed like a dream to me as a kid has floundered so much. Still trying to get this Torracat evolved just so I can say I have an Incineroar though. I can't say no to Incineroar.

I never much liked the tension between speed and exploration in the 2d Sonic Games-- the level design always felt sprawling and maze-like in a way that didn't mesh well with Sonic's speed.

Still, the music and aesthetics are top notch, so even if I never finished any of them other than the first, I'm glad to have played them.

All the classic 2d sonic games a good. And so is sonic mania. Jeff g has lost his mind!

Jeff is crazy, the sprite art is hardly that different between the classic Sonic games, yes it is a bit different but its hardly enough to warrant calling it terrible. Screw all you classic Sonic haters! Sonic 1-3 & Knuckles & CD & Mania are awesome!

Yo, Sonic 3 is absolute dogshit. It was back then, and it is now. Super Saiyan Sonic was the only draw. (in my opinion, of course - you do you!)

Although if I'm honest, I now hate every Sonic game and cannot have any fun with them. Everything, from the controls and Sonic's run wind-up, to the sprawling levels that betray the "go fast" ethos, to the bullshit "going fast? well, here's a bumper to stop your momentum" every 15 seconds, drive me batty.

Unreal Championship 2 seems to have some fun mechanics to play around with. Using a melee stick to bounce rockets back? Great!. Using the stick for a short but fast dash through the sky that can kill someone if they are in your path? Cool :)
