Marvel's Spider-Man Review

4
  • PS4

Spider-Man combines elements from plenty of other games to deliver a game with expansive combat, exciting traversal, and a solid, authentic story.

Editor's note: An audio version of this review can be found right here.

Superhero movies have become synonymous with high budgets and extreme polish, and with Marvel’s Spider-Man, Insomniac Games has attempted to push superhero games in the same direction. The game pits Spider-Man against a rogue’s gallery of enemies all trying to assume power in the vacuum left by the capture of The Kingpin, the godfather of New York crime. The story is conventional in some ways, and surprising in others, but for the most part it handles the Spider-Man canon with a high level of care and attention to detail.

The first thing you'll notice about Spider-Man is how fun the traversal is. The game really nails the basic swinging mechanics, and offers a slew of upgrades to make it even more enjoyable. The same can be said for the combat, which plays like a modern take on the classic “Arkham-style” brawler. Through upgrades to Spidey’s suit, gadgets, and skill tree the combat blossoms from adequate to enthralling over the course of the game.

Some ill-conceived stealth sequences hold the game back a bit, but overall, Marvel’s Spider-Man raises the bar for what a licensed open-world game can be in the same way that the Marvel Cinematic Universe has reshaped superhero movies.

Love this review format. I don't have much spare time to bother reading most reviews, but an audio review? Perfect!

I like this format (I'm always down for round-table discussions). I don't need gameplay footage mirroring what is being discussed during the review like others have requested.

As long as a rubric/template of things are always covered during these reviews:

What worked/didn't with the game

How did it control

How is the VA/Story/Writing

How're the options - anything added that sticks out - anything missing?

How long was your playthrough - did you finish the game?

Any bugs/crashes?

Any day-one patch - How did it work out of the box ---- This is a big one IMO, but just my opinion
How's the gameplay loop?
etc.

I'm down with this. More content from GiantBomb is always welcomed, imo.

Finished the game yesterday. I warmed up to it a lot more half way through as it opened up more side content, and abilities. I was kinda on the fence between a 7-8. Id go with scoring an 8. Its not Batman, but good first outing for Insomniac.

I liked this up until the point Ben blundered and gave away a huge spoiler. If you are going to continue with this definitely edit out spoilers...

Cool idea, I've listened to this podcast. However I do feel that quicklook becomes redundant at this point, so it's kinda weird seeing GB cannibalising it's own content. I prefer podcasts (because I can listen to them while working), but it steel feels weird

I personally think a normal written review is way more usefull and special than this format. This just felt like bombcast talk 1.5 and no review. Even for games that i know in not interested in or not going to buy i still like to read at least 2 or 3 paragraphs of the review. This form of the written review holds almost no useful/interesting information or well argued points. 75% of it might as well be the text on a store page. An hour long discussion/ interview might be a nice supplement, but it doesn't hold the same value for me. it feels like pleasant added fluff, not a worthy replacement.

Wait, video reviews are back! Surprising, since GB seemed to be talking about not doing reviews all anymore for the past couple of Pax. I'll follow a few more of these. If its a serious thing, then I might be back on board. Nice idea BTW

Since this is a review, I would like to see this "review" more structured. All of the other audio/video formats are all well suited to the "off the cuff" discussion.

I would like to see more of a script, with more well-thought out sentences, thoughts, and conclusions.

It appears the site is going less with the written word and more with discussion, which is fine, but a review needs to be more concise, specific and "archival".

I do understand that your team sees the future away from print, but a review is crown jewel of any gaming site.

I LOVED the podcast/video review. It was nice to be able to listen to the review on my drive. I love that it becomes kind of like the E3 interviews.

My biggest personal feedback is:

  • An intro / outro would be nice (theme song or something-- maybe just a soundclip from the game(can that be done without copyright infringement?))
  • A break in the middle would be nice.

I would love to see (or hear) more reviews like this!

I have mixed feelings about this. Let me try to put them into words:

  • I like that you guys are getting a away from traditional reviews and trying different stuff. It fits what the site is and it's been a long time coming.
  • That said, I wouldn't call this a review. I think that's why a lot of people are getting hung up on this first version of the format. They see the word "review" and see a score attached to it so they expect your traditional written, well thought out "review" of sorts. I say just get away from reviews and scores entirely.
  • I'm worried that this will have a negative impact on the Quick Look and Bombcast discussions. For example, it felt odd that the QL didn't feature Brad or Jeff for one of the biggest games of the year. I get the feeling they weren't on it because they had been on here already.
  • I like the idea that others have mentioned here of having someone play the game while others grill the "reviewer". Then you can have the opposite coast do the classic Quick Look to get a different perspective.
  • You can even have whatever this new format is not be afraid to talk spoilers to differentiate itself even further from the other content. Some of my favorite discussions you all have is when you get into the nitty gritty of games and talk of the moments that make or break a game.

This format needs someone in the studio playing clips relevant to the topics in real time or at least edited in afterwards.

I'm not 100% sure how I feel about this.

I love the thought of, essentially, a bite-sized single game-centric podcast, but it still feels like it lacks focus compared to a written review. In conversations, it's easy to forget or gloss over certain things, even if you've been forming your opinions for a while. A written review kind of forces you to sit down and present your thoughts as clearly and concisely as possible. Curious to see what they do with this though.

I really dig this new style of review. I think its in line with the way we consume media. Short written and an interview process to get to the meat of it. Im for it!
