I know this should probably be in the Quake forum but there isn't as many readers there. I know alot of people missed it but Ryan is running a Quake 2 ctf server and would like people to play on it. Who knows maybe you'll be able to play against him?
All you need is base Quake 2 patched up to 3.20 and the ip is ...
racistpuddin.dyndns.tv
pull up the console and type
"connect racistpuddin.dyndns.tv" without quotes
For all the ctf maps
ftp://ftp.idsoftware.com/idstuff/quake2/ctf/q2ctf150.zip
Just extract it to your quake2/ctf folder and you should be good to go
Other real useful quick downloads have helped a ton for how the mouse responds.
a patch 3.21.. Unoffical but it works with 3.2 servers
http://www.markshan.com/thesinraven/quake_II_v.3.21.htm
and a simple quick engine mod.. also compatible
http://www.r1ch.net/stuff/r1q2/download/r1q2-websetup.exe
Once all that is installed run r1q2.. join the server and put in these console commands
m_directinput 1
m_filter 0
cl_maxfps 100 (you wont see a difference but you will feel it in the aiming precision)
gl_swapinterval 1 (controls vsync it may help some people)
if you dont like typing in all of that every time this is easy to use

The second installment of id Software's Quake series of fast-paced first-person shooters abandons the original's Lovecraftian theme for a hard sci-fi aesthetic. A lone space marine must infiltrate the homeworld of a hostile bio-mechanical race known as the Strogg and prevent them from invading Earth.
Giantbomb Quake 2 server.
Ahhh good to know thanks :P
Also someone posted a helpful topic in the Quake 2 forums. Quake 2 multiplayer for free? Can anyone confirm if this works?
http://www.esreality.com/?a=post&id=1607521
It is in fact illegal. I skimmed through the comments there and apparently they applied an official patch to the demo which "unlocked" it or some-such. Naturally that's not covered by the original license at all, never mind the included content with its own various copyrights (e. g. sound effects). So downloading that thing could be risky." It's worth noting that Quake 2 isn't freeware and is still being sold on Steam. Them distributing Quake 2 (even it's multiplayer components alone) may well be illegal. I didn't check the link so if it's authorized by Id then cool. "
Yeah its definitely at your own risk.. the files they used overall are 100% legal... and ID hasnt had them remove it and its been 2 years.. it sounds sort of safe
