Games I played in 2019

A list of games I played in 2019. Games not released in 2019 will have its year noted.

List items

  • 2017.

  • The resolution to the long journey wasn´t quite as emotional as some of the moments in the stories that lead up to it, perhaps due to the many threads that needed resolution, but it did have one part I really liked. As an action RPG it´s bigger than it´s ever been and pretty impressive grapically, but the combat is still too easy to mash out and too hard to master to ultimately be very enjoyable to me. It will be interesting to see where the franchise goes from here, regardless of whether I´ll be along for the ride or not.

  • 2018. Very enjoyable strategy rougelite thus far. Simple to understand yet seem to have a lot of variety going for it.

  • I don´t play a lot of FPS games, and haven´t gotten into a Battle Royale before either, but it´s been fun putting some time into this one, so I´m gonna try to follow it as it develops. Boy, I´m bad at it though.

  • 2017. Very cool Metroidvania game. Even though I like bugs and masks the style took a bit to grow on me. Loads of things to find and fight, with plenty of it being optional, and it just has a great, moody atmosphere. That said, there was a bit too much running back and forth in the last third of the game for my liking, but the lore and the characters was definitely worth it. I came away from it really loving the world.

  • A cool and pretty fun, modern beat em up in the best sense. Levels are mostly straightforward and combat is open for you to do whatever you want. Some movement is a bit looser which works well, while all the combat tweaks and additions feel like good choices. The story went to a place that felt a little overdone, but still ended up having a decent conclusion. It also went surprisingly deep with the references to past games, in a way that the series hasn´t really done before. Spending time replaying it to unlock all the moves and trying to get better at the combat has been enjoyable too.

  • Baba is Cool. Baba is Cute. Baba is Hard and Fair. Music is Good. Puzzle is Satisfying. Win is Achievable. Mind is Weak but Baba is Strong.

  • After an initial hump that nearly turned me off of the game completely, I finally got the rhythm of it and enjoyed it a lot more. Still the work it took to get through some of the later bosses, and the grinding I put in, put a bit of a damper on the experience for a while. It was super fun until it wasn´t, and then it just became a drag. Still, going after the Platinum Trophy after a few days break post-finishing required more playthroughs. And it turns out that re-fighting bosses whose patterns I knew, but with better health and healing available, as well as seeing story I was miffed about missing out on the first time around made me come around on the game again, and I was able to leave it with a positive impression.

  • 2018. Got this to play with family, was relatively successful. It has plenty of things to do and easy enough controls to be pretty approachable, the only issue is the limited customization of the different game modes, as well as the 4 player requirement.

  • 2018. A game that´s full of jank, with frequent, long loading times and a few straight up crashes being the main issues. The combat it has feels stiff and lacks punch, but does get the job done once you´ve gotten used to it. Which leaves its interesting setting and large number of intriguing side characters as the game´s main draw. I´d compare the enjoyment I got from its NPCs to what I´ve gotten from Zelda side-stuff before. It has a similar approach where you peel away the layers of a character´s story over time, with interesting twists along the way that you have to dig a little to find. The one issue I currently have, which might be a result of not engaging with the killing of NPCs that the game allows, is that there´s rarely, if at all, any proper resolution to these stories. It´s also sometimes hard to tell what different conversation options will express until after you pick them, which can be frustrating. Other than that it´s been fun to talk to all the different people.

  • A OK retro-styled game with very good production values. It has the same mix of sidescrolling and overhead perspective style gameplay as the last entry, and the series as a whole, though it´s also likely a better balanced version of said game than its very easy predecessor. Despite this depth of gameplay variety, as well as some new shiny features, I never found myself super engaged by it. Probably partly because its designs and story was so strongly mired in the same old, tired tropes that every run-of-the-mill anime out there already is, that it was hard to do anything but roll my eyes at it. Ultimately, it´s still a good game of decent length that I didn´t have a bad time playing, but which also couldn´t set my world on fire.

  • The change from a Roguelike format to a more traditional progression was a weird one. The changes the game design went through to adapt the series to a longer form adventure as opposed to a short repeatable one seem mostly sound, but it left me feeling like it was a less focused and definitely less challenging experience than the original. That said, the upgrade to the art and some mechanics shouldn´t be overlooked, and while the tempo of the music doesn´t seem to shift as drastically as in its predecessor, all the tunes were still good to move to. I still need to put more time onto the permadeath mode, but for now it´s made me more interested in the prospect of a regular sequel to the first game in its original format.

  • Good Igavania with some jank. Took a bit before I got a good rhythm in and didn´t stuff the jump attacks, but after that it was a fun, grindy time, similar to past games.

  • A bigger, better Mario Maker. I didn´t stick with it for long this time around but am hoping it´ll have a feature update or so that gets me back in.

  • 2013. Been getting heavily into this game for a bit. I´m still in the base game so it´s very much a by the numbers MMO, but I enjoy the fighting mechanics well enough and the crafting/gathering is more involved than in other games I´ve tried, which was a welcome surprise. Story stuff I´ve absorbed so far switches between your regular anime clichés and some more interesting political stuff. I´m hoping it´ll get better as I go along, like I hear it does.

  • Iceborne. Master Rank adds some monsters, moves and quality of life upgrades, but it´s also been fun to enjoy the greater freedom the Master rank armor allows in terms of customization.

  • A cool fighting game with easy-to-perform moves, tempting me to get into the comic. I´ll probably not play it a lot, as per usual.

  • A remake of a PS1 game that definitely feels like it. Specifically enemy and boss design but also many interactions with objects feel very basic and unfortunately not always reliable. Directly comparing it with the original however, it turns out that there has still been a lot done to improve the feel and design of the original. It's unfortunate then that the game couldn't get even further polish as it is still in a state where getting hung up on walls, having a hard time triggering signs to be read, as well as enemy behaviour breaking among other minor issues still happen, some less frequently than others.

There is a fun if basic game at the core here, with a cool artstyle, decently irreverent tone and fun varied level design, that would have been easier to recommend if it was present in a more polished package. As it stands, I grew to enjoy it only after putting significant time into it.

  • Pokemon.
