VIDEO GAAAAAAAAAAAAAAMES!

List items

  • Yes LISA is the number one game on my list. Did you play it? Of course you didn't! This game came out on December 15th, it's safe to say it was doomed to never win any sort of accolades from any major publications due to it's release date but I think that's fine. This game seems almost destined to follow in the footsteps of games like OFF, Space Funeral and Yume Nikki. Unknown to the general populace but beloved by those who have played it.

I believe I said it somewhere else before but LISA is the kind of game that I'd like to make, in every single fashion, if I had any kind of ability to do so. It's a game that really resonates with me and I suppose that's all that really matters, yeah?

  • Looking back at it, nothing in Jazzpunk seems like it should make sense or be as funny as it turns out being. If you were to isolate any of the "jokes" in this "game" and tell them to someone, anyone even, they'd probably tell you to stop being so unfunny and to leave them alone. Together these ""jokes"" form some sort of comedic insanity that takes place in a world not too dissimilar from our own and told in a series of non sequiturs. I have no idea what that last sentence I wrote even means.

    Jazzpunk.

  • Out of all the games I played this year, only one of them has made me appreciate it's developer more after/during my time playing it. Card City Nights isn't the deepest card game ever but it's Smash Bros.-like roster of cameo appearances, undeniable charm and godlike music make it something really, really special.

  • Originally much higher on my list, Rebirth was almost a shoe-in for any game of the year stuff I had planned on doing this year. I bumped it down a few notches as I have eventually come to realize that it's just the same ol' Isaac just with a new coat of paint and some new tricks. TBoI is still a great game though, Rebirth is just the 'definitive' experience.

  • Who'd have thought that in 2014 they'd still be making tower defense games and good ones at that? I've been keeping an eye on all of the 'Endless' games but DoE is the one I've been drawn to the most. From top to bottom DoE seems like a game that tons of thought went into. It's very mechanics heavy and at a first glance, looks very intimidating. Everything turns out to be very familiar but not familiar enough where things won't get challenging after a while.

As someone who plays a ton of rogue-likes, a genre where learning systems is key to success. I can say that DoE is a game where a lot of learning is required for a guaranteed victory. I haven't put a ton of time into it yet but I am definitely looking forward to doing so in 2015!

  • USFIV rekindled the flame that is my love for fighting games. Skullgirls has been my go-to since it was released on PC but going back to SFIV has really shown me what I've learned. I used to be really, really bad at every character with a few exceptions but now I can say that I'm at least somewhat decent with every character. I'm still a scrub but I have some confidence in knowing I'm a little bit less of a scrub than I was about this time last year.

  • If 2014 is the year of mid-air dashes then Cloudbuilt takes the cake. It reminds me a lot of playing Mirror's Edge for the first time back whenever that came out. Just a great sense of mobility and some really undesirable shooting segments. Seriously though, Cloudbuilt's one of the best feeling games that I've played this year. I'm not sure how it slipped under so many people's radars.

  • There's nothing about The Fall that you couldn't already hear about on this site somewhere. In terms of episodic content that started this year, or in recent memory, The Fall ends on one hell of a cliffhanger and I couldn't be more excited to see where the story goes.

  • Someone has to give ACE Team credit for creating some of the most interesting games on the market. Abyss Odyssey is decidedly the least insane of their 4 games but it's probably the best. The controls take some time to get accustomed to but once you get a sense of the timing it feels like your character's being blessed by a Smash Bros. pro's elegant, graceful technique.

  • Child of Light is cute as hell. I've played like, 2 cute games this year. CoL is the most fleshed out game of the two and if there's anything this industry needs more of right now it's video games that are CUTE AS HELLLLLLLLLLLLLL. Like this one.
