OverviewInfinity Ward is a game developer company currently owned by Activision, and is the main developer of the Call of Duty series.HistoryAt the Infinity Ward headquarters.Infinity Ward was founded in 2002 by former employees from 2015, who had previously worked on Medal of Honor: Allied Assault.In 2003, Infinity Ward was acquired by Activision and released their first game, Call of Duty. The game received critical acclaim from gamers and reviewers alike, which resulted in more than 50 "Game of The Year" awards.In 2005, Call of Duty 2 was released for both the PC and Xbox 360, where it became the first Xbox 360 game to reach over 1 million units sold. It was also the most played Xbox Live game from November 2005 to April 2006.Two years later, in late 2007, Call of Duty 4: Modern warfare was released on the PC, Xbox 360, and PlayStation 3. It was the first game in the series to leave World War II, which it instead changed with a modern setting. The game became a huge success for Infinity Ward both in terms of sales and reviews.In 2008, Infinity Ward was named the game developer of the year in Game Developer Magazine.In November 2009, Infinity Ward released the much anticipated sequel to 2007's Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare, titled Modern Warfare 2. It was the first direct sequel to a Call of Duty game, including many of the characters from the previous game. It received very positive reviews overall with a Metacritic rating of 95. Reviewer Jeff Gerstmann wrote: "If you've ever been interested in a first-person shooter, buy this game." Over 2 million players were classified on the Xbox 360 Multiplayer leaderboards within 24 hours of the game's release.On March 1 2010, the two studio heads Vince Zampella and Jason West, which both originated from 2015, were suddenly taken away from the studio without warning to a meeting with Activision. Several hours later they reappeared from the meeting unemployed. As of this writing, lawsuits are flying in both directions and nothing conclusive has been announced.April 2010 marked the resignations of more than 10 Infinity Ward employees, including the several lead designers, programmers and engineers. This exodus came days after the announcement of West and Zampella's new studio Respawn Entertainment.
