Are iOS/tablet games eligible for your personal GOTY list?

A simple yes or no answer will suffice but you can expand on if you want.

Are iOS/tablet games eligible for your personal GOTY lists? I've put too much thought into this question the last two years around this time. Up until pretty recently, had Plague Inc. in my top 10 before I disqualified it simply because it was a game on my iPad. To me, stacking a tablet game to a console game felt too much like bringing a knife to a gun fight. However this last year, it really feels like the experiences we're able to get on these devices are have gotten better. Sure, there are still your myriad of runners, tower defenses, and gimmicky games that utilize the touch pad. But I genuinely had more fun and ultimately, better experiences, with some of my iOS games than I did big budget games.

What's your stance? If you don't count them, what's your reasoning? If you do, how to you justify it? If any actually made your list, which ones are they?

Yes; if it's an enjoyable enough game I'll count it. I haven't found any I would list, though.

Games like Bad Piggies and 1000000 are up there for me personally.

Why wouldn't they be? =/
 
They're games, right?...and if you enjoyed them, then include them.

I didn't add it to mine, but I really love Super Hexagon. Definitely an honorable mention.

Super Hexagon is #3 on my list. So yeah, I definitely think iOS games should be included if worthy.

If a game is good enough to include on the list, I'd put it, no matter what platform it's on. The fact that so few iOS/tablet games are worth including makes it that much more worthwhile to include the ones that ARE worthy.

Yes, but I've never played a mobile game that I've enjoyed to a great extent, except for Lemonade Tycoon.

Absolutely. There's no way I could leave Spaceteam off of my list. I've never had more fun with a co-op game.

If there was one that impressed me enough then sure. Saying they aren't worthy because they aren't on a PC or a console is dumb.

no, i don't really count them as game of the year. i don't see them as they're not games on the system. i don't really play them as i don't have a IOS or tablet.

Walking Dead has won a few GOTY so I would say yes.

I have no interest in either of those devices, so, no. I wouldn't exclude games from them if I did own one of those though,

You make an interesting point. I'd venture to guest most people who played The Walking Dead played through on PC or consoles. Does the fact that it was ported to tablets mean it also gets labeled a tablet game? The answer is yes but no, right? Maybe it's just me, but I still get a stigma amongst "core gamers" that put such games a notch below console/PC releases.

Interesting enough, Cook, Serve, Delicious! made my Top 10 but it was the iPad version that grabbed me, not the PC version.

I played Peggle for the first time this year on my iPad and it's on my Top 10 Games I Played This Year list. So yes?

Super Hexagon would be on mine if I made one.

I played The Walking Dead on iOS, that game is high up there for me. So yes.

Games are games. Whether they are on the latest, shiniest console or a three-year-old Android 2.3 smartphone. If they are good enough to be your GOTY or in your GOTY list, no problem in doing so.

Yup. If Magic 2013 ran better on my first gen iPad, I think it'd be pretty high on my GotY list. I don't see any reason for people to not consider them. The only reason I'm not a big fan of iOS or other smartphone / tablet games is because most of them aren't that good, not because of the platform they're on. (Although the best game with bad controls becomes a poor game, so that's one platform-specific thing.)

Of course they count towards GOTY. I think it's very weird when people think only big AAA titles can be thought as best games of the year. Small games with lots of character and games that bring you alot of joy while playing are just as good games as some serious AAA game. And for me Rayman Jungle Run was a brilliant game this year

It would be interesting to see if Tetris had been a 2012 release and to see if people would still think it would be as great as it is simply because it's not a huge complicated title.

Of course they should be. 10,000,000 and Plague Inc are 2 games that come to mind that will probably be on my GOTY list somewhere..

I'd put one there if it was deserving. Generally I like tablet games even more when they get a PC port, though. (Super Hexagon, looking at you)

If you think so than yes. If you noticed a flash game made in into the stuffs' top 10 games.

Sure. I haven't played any phone games this year, but I wouldn't exclude them.

Games are games, if people enjoy their mobile or tablet games i don't see why they shouldn't count.

Absolutely. Cook, Serve. Delicious! for iPad is definitely in my top 10, as is Middle Manager of Justice for iPhone.

It's pretty sad that we live in an era where cell phone games can beat out AAA games on PC/console. Lol.

No. I have never played one that felt like anything but a dumb flash game. If they made a real game that just happened to be on a phone though sure. I just have not seen one made yet.

I tried to play it after I beat it on PS3, I couldn't stand the controls.

Yup, they totally count for me. If I'm building a list of the best video games in a year then all that matters for a game to be able to make my list is the year it's from and how good it is, everything else is irrelevant. That being said, while I don't play many mobile games, I've never seen something for a mobile device that really made me think "Wow, this could be one of the best games this year".
