A Japanese politician, former democratic party leader Naoto Kan, was verbally abused by large numbers of Dragon Quest fans in Akihabara yesterday. The incident happened while he was making a formal public speech which gave full support to fellow politician Banri Kaieda, who is running in the upcoming elections for the House of Representatives for Tokyo1 District.
Kan was giving the speech outside Akihabara's giant Yodobashi store. It was very busy outside the store as it is usually is, but it was especially so yesterday because in addition to the usual shopping crowds, a special area called Ruida's Pub had been set up for Dragon Quest IX players to exchange game data. Naturally, hundreds of crazed DQ fans had flocked to it. The close proximity of the area where the speech was taking place, to Ruida's Pub area where fans were exchanging data ,caused a notable degree of conflict.
According to the Nikkei newspaper, Kan, apparently noting that the large crowd at the Ruida's Pub area who weren't paying attention to his speech, was angered and suddenly said:
"There are many people enjoying games at that place called Ruida's Pub. Having fun is great. But human human relationships have become lacking."
Kan's brave commentary prompted some harsh words from the many DQIX players that were loitering around Ruida's Pub, the majority began directing nasty slurs at him, one man shouting that Kan should, "go **** a dirty slime", while another proclaimed "You're giving a speech? I was unaware. I'm not even interested you idiot!."
Mr Naoto-kun would be wise not to mess with the DQ fans in future, making enemies of the 3.5 million lovers of Dragon Quest IX cannot be a good idea for a politician in Japan.
